LIMUSA RESOLVES ON AMALGAMATION    


Liberated Metalworkers Union of South Africa (LIMUSA) is delighted to announce a resolution to Amalgamation under National Union of Mine workers (NUM) was adopted in virtual National Congress held on 27th June 2020. In discussion led by COSATU CEC the two unions have been in discussions about on the application of a COSATU principle of "one industry one union" since 2018. The discussion guided by the COSATU longstanding resolution of merger and amalgamation of the trade unions operates in same, similar, overlapping industries to strengthen the bargaining power of the workers.  

 

As a democratic and worker controlled union we had been engaging structures and general membership to seek mandate on amalgamation question extensively in 2019. Majority of the members supported the Amalgamation which necessitated National Congress to be convened. Due to Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent Lockdown regulations the union decided use technological innovations to convene a virtual National Congress on 27th June 2020. The virtual National Congress connected delegates from across seven (7) provinces in the country to deliberate on the amalgamation.  

The Congress unanimously agreed on the amalgamation as new strategy to be adopted to ensure the initial objective of keeping metalworkers in COSATU is strengthen even more. Central objective of the Amalgamation is unity of workers, improved service to members, strengthening of NUM and our federation COSATU.

 

The congress also commemorated and paid tribute to our fallen heroes our founding President and General Secretary comrade Sifiso Maphumulo and comrade Cedric Gina for their remarkable contribution in working class struggle in general and metalworkers struggle in particular.

 

 We are looking forward to working together with NUM leadership and structures to build united and stronger trade union organization of Elijah Barayi to fight the exploitation of workers at all manifestations our industry

 

We would like to also give thanks to COSATU and all her affiliates who had supported and work closely with LIMUSA since its formation until this congress, they have indeed given a practical meaning to our slogan of “an injury to one is an injury to all”
