Peru did not play in the first Matchday of the tournament. They last saw play on June 8, beating Ecuador 2-1 in a World Cup Qualifier.

The specter of Covid-19 looms over the tournament. On Monday, Brazil’s Ministry of Health said that 31 players and Copa America delegation members had tested positive for COVID-19 by Sunday, according to ESPN. SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s health ministry has documented 41 cases of COVID-19 related to the Copa America, including 31 players or staffers and 10 workers who were hired for the event.

The ministry said in a statement that all workers who tested positive were in Brasilia, where Brazil kicked off the tournament on Sunday with a 3-0 win over Venezuela. The visiting Venezuela squad was depleted after nearly a dozen cases of COVID-19 involving players or staff.

Brazil stepped in late as emergency host of the 10-team continental championship despite the country having the second-highest number of recorded deaths from the coronavirus in the world, almost 490,000.

President Jair Bolsonaro offered to hold the tournament in Brazil only two weeks ago after Argentina and Colombia were dropped as co-hosts. He is a critic of social distancing policies and argues the economic impact of shutdown measures kills more than the virus.

Brazil’s health ministry said 2,927 COVID-19 tests related to Copa America have been conducted so far.

Earlier Monday, one of the Peru squad’s fitness coaches tested positive COVID-19 in Lima. Nestor Bonillo will not travel to Brazil. It was not clear whether he was counted by Brazil’s health ministry as one of the confirmed cases related to the tournament.

On the weekend, there was a series of COVID-19 cases related to teams here for the tournament.

Colombia said its technical assistant Pablo Román and physiotherapist Carlos Entrena have the virus. Hours earlier, Venezuela announced it had summoned 15 new players for the squad at short notice after eight tested positive upon arrival in Brazil. Another three members of the Venezuelan coaching staff were also infected.

The Bolivian Football Federation said three players and one coach also had the virus.

The Copa America quarterfinals begin on Friday, and the day closes out with a big one as Brazil face Chile in Rio. Brazil are undefeated with a 3-1-0 record, winning Group B and looking like the clear-cut favorites to win it all. Chile went 1-2-1 in Group A to finish in fourth but are averaging under a goal per game ahead of this massive test. The winner will face either Paraguay or Peru in the semifinals, while the loser is eliminated.

A dominant Brazil national team faces a challenge from Chile in the 2021 Copa America quarterfinals at Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos on Friday, July 2 (7/2/2021).

Brazil vs. Chile is one of four matches scheduled for the quarterfinals stage of the Copa America, and will be broadcast in the United States on FS1. It can be streamed live on fuboTV, AT&T TV and other live TV streaming services. Full TV and streaming schedule below.

Brazil finished the Group Stage with it’s only draw of the tournament so far against Ecuador (1-1). The host nation led Group B with a 3-1-0 record, 10 points and a win ahead of 2nd place Peru.

Chile’s fate was well-enough sealed before their Round 5 loss to Paraguay. Despite Chile’s 4th place finish in Group A (1-2-1), last place Bolivia stood no chance of upsetting the standings with an abysmal 0-0-4 record.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Defending champion Brazil may have the smoothest path to the final of the Copa America it is hosting.

The hottest competition could be in the other half of the quarterfinals, where archrivals Argentina and Uruguay could meet in the semifinals.

The quarterfinals were finalized on Monday after the last two group matches.

Argentina beat Bolivia 4-1 and ensured it finished atop Group A, setting up a game against Ecuador.

Ecuador has yet to win after a loss and three draws, including 1-1 with Brazil on Sunday. Ecuador is third in South American World Cup qualifiers.

“We have the utmost respect for Ecuador, they have proven to be a good, young and dynamic team that will sure give us a war,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said.

If Lionel Messi’s lineup beats Ecuador, coached by Argentine Gustavo Alfaro, its faces Uruguay or Colombia. That matchup has produced some great encounters recently, including Colombia’s 2-0 win in the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

On Monday, Uruguay set up the latest match by defeating Paraguay 1-0. The only goal came from the spot by veteran Edinson Cavani.

“We grew as the Copa advanced,” Uruguay coach Óscar Tabárez said. “We needed to win and we needed to improve our game; both things are happening.”

Uruguay has 15 Copa America titles, the most recent in 2011. Argentina has 14 but none since 1993.

Brazil is aiming for a 10th South American championship.

The most immediate challenge for Neymar’s Brazil will be Chile’s ageing team.

Chile’s only win so far was against Bolivia but it may be reinforced by striker Alexis Sanchez, who missed the group stage due to injury.

A win against Chile on Friday will put Brazil in the semifinals against Peru or Paraguay. Both teams recently lost to the Selecao without offering much resistance.

On June 8, shortly before the Copa America, Brazil won at Paraguay 2-0 in World Cup qualifying. Days later, Brazil crushed Peru 4-0 in the group stage of the Copa America.

Brazil also has the advantage of having all of its potential knockout matches in Rio, close to its Granja Comary training ground in Teresopolis.

However, Neymar criticized Nilton Santos Stadium — the venue for their quarterfinal and potential semifinal — on Monday for a second time. The stadium field has been heavily criticized for lacking enough grass since the start of the tournament, including by Neymar after the Peru win.

The final is on July 10 at Maracana.

Storylines

Brazil: This isn’t the Chile of five or 10 years ago, and this is probably the best Brazil we’ve seen in over a decade, so this has a chance to get out of hand early, even though Brazil can sometimes take a while to get going. The size of Brazil in defense could lead them to some success on corner kicks, so keep an eye on somebody like Marquinhos. Chile will likely get next to nothing in attack due to this dominant backline, but being over aggressive could give the underdogs the chance to do something on a set piece. Expect Brazil to win comfortably.

Chile: They produced just a shot on goal against Paraguay in their last group stage game and enter struggling big time in attack. So, when looking at Brazil’s defense, how in the world do they find a path towards victory? Chile will have to emphasize defense or this could get out of hand, and they are going to need a fortunate call, a lucky bounce or some type of big error to go their way to sniff a victory. Expect them to struggle to see the ball in the attacking third and for the chances to be few. It’s not impossible, but this is the tallest task for any team in the quarter
