What role did slavery play in the Civil War?

We have had a lot of discussion at our club meetings in recent months
about role Slavery played in the Civil War. Some call it a primary
cause of the war. Others say the war wasn't about slavery at all. It
was about States' Rights, or the Preservation of the Union, or some
other issue.
