Will you make your way home or will you explore what the big city has to offer first? I mean, getting home is obviously your main priority. Obviously. Well, it's one of your priorities. Maybe more of a guideline... It's definitely on your To-Do list somewhere! But first? Exploration!

Little Kitty, Big City is an upcoming adventure video game developed by American indie developer Double Dagger Studio. The player assumes the role of a cat lost within a city, with the main objective of making their way back home. It is set to be released for the Nintendo Switch, Windows, the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X/S in early 2024.

Little Kitty, Big City is a third-person adventure video game where the player controls a black, domestic cat that is lost within a large Japanese city. The player has to navigate the cat back to its home, but they can also interact with the city and do typical cat actions, such as catch birds, jump into boxes, steal food and play with their tail.[1][2][3] The player can also communicate with other animals in the city and may dress up in various hats.[4][5][6]

Tucked throughout the museum, two of the sculptures, Pete and Re-Pete and Veronica, will invite a find-the-kitty scavenger hunt to all comers, and adventurous visitors can see them achieve post-mortem reanimation in The Judy Chicago Kitty City Augmented Reality Experience.

Against its vibrant cartoon-like world, and the protagonist's massive green sparkling eyes that shine like diamonds in the sun, the preciseness with which Wood and his team have articulated their source material is impressive. Wood adds: "We've tried to introduce a lot of cat-isms, and things that cats would naturally do. We want people to see it and be like, hey, my cat does that! I dunno, sometimes having a cat feels like you're in this little club, and we want to make sure that people feel that same way about the character."

"I'm constantly sending Micah, my animator, TikToks, YouTube videos, or even videos of my own cats, just little things here and there, like: this is so cool, we've gotta put this in the game! But there's only so much of it we can actually put in. It's funny because I've had cats my whole life, I subscribe to all the cat channels, and for whatever reasons, cats are still just so fascinating. The stuff they do, how clumsy they can be. You know, I don't really know what it is about them. I guess I'm just really into cats."

So I, the little kitty, proceeded to cause as much mischief as I could in the big city. Wood anticipated that I (and many others) would want to do the same, so everything is gamified to reward that type of behavior, in an almost Untitled Goose Game sort of way.

Tried out the Little Kitty Big City demo! What an immediately charming, delightful little experience. The player kitty controls well and a lot of thought has gone into making the collectables, interactables and world as feline-forward as possible.

Stinky Joe was only the beginning. We went on to establish a secret sanctuary in our neighborhood. We learned how to never say no (and mean it), how to make kitty burritos (at medication time), and more. We even began development on a remote capture cage for a TNR program (but then it rained!).

Cities aren't really built to animal scale, but then again neither does it seem like forests would be but the critters get by just fine. Life tends to adapt to its niche, and some species are good enough to even make the niche adapt to it. Cats are one of the top species at making the human world conform to its needs, but even so the city is no place for a naive little kitty to wander around unsupervised. Thankfully the town in Little Kitty, Big City is a friendly place with more than a touch of cartoon physics in its makeup, so when a small black cat falls out of a highrise window it can grab onto a passing bird to make the descent to ground level with barely a hair out of place. Getting back home, though, is going to be a bit more troublesome than falling out of it.

The demo for Little Kitty, Big City dropped the other day and it's a super-cute adventure through a sunny, friendly town featuring a mischievous black cat who would certainly like to get home, but also there are distractions in the world and a lot to learn. The demo takes place over a small section of town with the rest gated off by walls and impassable puddles, and it's just enough to get a good sense of tone plus give a workout to the nameless kitty's starting abilities. Jump is either a quick tap of the button or held down for precise aiming, with paw prints showing the landing area, while the triggers swipe with the left and right paws, respectively. The stealth button lets you sneak up on unsuspecting birds for a pounce before letting them go, causing them to leave a collectible feather behind, and the same button also doubles for crawling under tight spaces. Other abilities like being able to climb vines (shown in the year-old trailer below) will presumably come along later, but there are a few hats to collect kicking around the neighborhood so you can do a little dress-up.

The basic flow of the game is playful exploration/adventure, with goals popping up when you discover a new toy to play with or meet a new character. Hop into a trash can and get a mini-quest to do it to ten of them, or a crow wants a nice pile of "shinies" that you can find scattered all over the place. There's not a lot of platforming in the demo but the game architecture shows there's going to be plenty later, letting the kitty climb up higher than is safe and swat flower pots onto the streets below. Home is way up back in a high-rise apartment and it's not going to be easy to get there, especially with all the distracting fun that can be had in the streets below. It might take a bit to get back into the most likely worried arms of its owners, but first there's a whole new world to play with in the exciting streets below.

Wholesome Games held a new showcase of indie games this evening, and the pick of the litter was Little Kitty, Big City. It's a game about exploring a (big) city as a (little) kitty, and generally doing cat things. Watch the trailer below.
