Previously, I had been using the internet via a dial-up connection to
Skyband, but now have an Airtel dongle.

With the connection to Skyband, I could use Outlook Express to send
and receive e-mails using my addresses with africa-online and hotmail.
Now that I have switched to using the Airtel dongle I find that the
hotmail addresses work exactly as before (as long as I choose Airtel
Malawi for my "dial up" connection). However, with africa-online I can
only RECEIVE now. When I try to SEND, I see this error message:

"The host 'smtp.africa-online.net' could not be found. Please verify
that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: Africa
Online', Server: 'smtp.africa-online.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D"

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to be able to SEND with Outlook
Express via Airtel? Is the problem something to do with the outgoing
mail SMTP setting and port number, which are still for AfOL. Am I
supposed to change these to something for Airtel, and if so what are
the exact settings?

Thanks

Sending e-mails through Africa-online with Outlook Express and an
Airtel dongle.

I have just been told the solution to my problem. It is very simple.
On the Servers page for the account, where the settings for pop3 and
smtp go, just tick the box which says "my server requires
authentication". Then everything just works fine!
