Fiat currencies have existed for centuries and the transfer of
funds electronically have been in use for decades most recently
driven by commerce moving to the internet. The UUASC-LA
July 2011 presentation focuses on digital currencies and the tools
to work with them. There will be a specific coverage of BitCoin, the
digital currency that has been grabbing the tech news headlines
recently.
The presentation will start with an introduction by the speaker
coordinator and long time UUASC member Ralf Pieper followed
by the guest speakers including...
Marc Bevand whose background lies in computer and network security.
He has been involved in various open source projects related to
virtualization, cryptography, brute-forcing, general purpose GPU
computing, etc. He discovered Bitcoin in December 2010 due to its
connection to GPGPU computing, and thinks its clever use of
cryptography and openness has the potential to revolutionize certain
aspects of modern financial systems.
David Maust an avid Bitcoin miner whose presented Postifix and Subversion
at UUASC in past.
Stephen Gornick is frequent blogger and avid user of bitcoin.
This presentation should bring the attendees up to date on the current state
of digital currencies and provide for some interesting discussion between the
audience and the speakers.
After the meeting, you are invited to mingle with many of the chapter members
at UUASC-LA's new after meeting location once we figure out where that will be.
WARNING: People may take photographs and shoot video of UUASC-LA
meetings and social events. If someone is absolutely opposed to having
his or her photograph taken, that
person needs to please speak with the photographer.
Warning to photographers: You must have a person's permission to post
photographs in any public manner.
