Hi,

I am new to likwid. I just installed it on my Ubuntu 14.04 machine.

When running likwid-powermeter I receive the following error:

The Intel Core Westmere processor does not support reading power data

May I ask if you can kindly let me know what the issue is?

Best Regards
Sajjad

Hi Sajjad,

to measure energy consumption the processor has to support the Intel RAPL interface. RAPL was introduced with the Intel SandyBridge architecture. All previous processors (and Westmere is one of those)  do not support RAPL. Therefore you cannot use the full functionality of likwid-powermeter on your processor (which seems to be an Intel Westmere). Most other likwid  tools should  work though.

Hi,

Thank you Jan.

May I ask if likwid-perfctr could be used to get the data of power consumption from CPU?

Yes it can, but only on processors which support RAPL.

On processors which support RAPL artificial events are added in likwid-perfctr  to access the RAPL counters.

Hi Jan,

May I ask how I can check if a processor supports RAPL?

For example from this link in Wikipedia:

it appears that the CPU Core i7 4770 3.4GHz is a later generation compared to "Sandy Bridge" processors. So it should support RAPL. AM I right?

Best Regards
Sajjad

Hi,
you may use likwid-topology which extracts this information from cpuid.

What does likwid-topology report for your machine?
Of course if this is a Haswell machine it should work.
