Following the success of the English dub of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, the Ocean Group dubbed Mobile Suit Gundam in English. It premiered on Monday, July 23, 2001 on Cartoon Network's Toonami in the US. It did very well, but it was later canceled before the entire series was shown . This was due to the September 11, 2001 attacks occurring. Immediately following the attacks Cartoon Network, and many other stations, began pulling war-themed content and violent programming as well. Although Cowboy Bebop came back before too long, the remaining episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam were shown as part of Toonami's "New Year's Eve-il" special on December 31, 2001. While the 9/11 attacks are likely why it was taken off initially, it is not sufficient to explain why the show return few months later completely unedited like many other contemporary anime airing on the block were in response. Aside from fan speculation, the source of this seems to be an anonymous report which appeared on the fan-site gundam.com on September 14, purporting to summarize an internal Cartoon Network memo. This report can be seen in The Internet Wayback Machine.

Despite initial low ratings that caused the series' cancellation, the popularity of Gundam saw a boost from the introduction of Bandai's Gunpla models in 1980 and from reruns and the theatrical release of the anime, leading to the creation of a prolific and lucrative media and toy franchise. The series is famous for revolutionizing the giant robot genre due to the handling of mobile suits as weapons of war, as well as the portrayal of their pilots as ordinary soldiers. This aspects contrasted with the previous style of portraying hero pilots and their giant super hero robots.

Set in a fictional universe (Universal Century year 0079 according to the Gundam Calendar), the Principality of Zeon has declared independence from the Earth Federation, and subsequently launched a war of independence called the One Year War. The conflict has directly affected every continent on Earth, also nearly every space colony and lunar settlement. Zeon, though smaller, has the tactical upper hand through their use of a new type of humanoid weapons called mobile suits. After half of all humanity perishes in the conflict, the war settled into a bitter stalemate lasting over 8 months.

The "Mobile Suits" of the show were inspired by the powered armor from the novel Starship Troopers from 1959.[2] Mobile suits were conceptualized as human-like robots which would not only appeal to children.[1] Yoshiyuki Tomino's original plot for the anime was considerably much more grim, with Amuro dying halfway through the series, and the crew of the White Base having to ally with Char (who is given a red Gundam), but finally having to battle him after he takes control of the Principality of Zeon. The original concept found expression in a series of novels written by Tomino soon after the show's conclusion, and elements of the storyline weaved themselves into Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack.

Tomino compares the machines with religious history in Japan, most notably the worship of Buddha statues located in temples. The relationship between the pilot and the mobile suit has also been compared with the Formula One drivers who rely on machines to achieve a goal.[7] In order to give the mechas fast movements, most of the fights were situated in space where there was low gravity. This led to the creation of space colonies as a common setting. In order to explain how a person as young as Amuro could pilot the Gundam, the team came up with the idea of Newtypes.[1]

The series takes place in the year 0079note read as "double oh seventy-nine" of the Universal Century, during a war between the Earth Federation that governs Earth and most of the space colonies and the Principality of Zeon, a group of colonies that declared independence from the Federation. Despite coexisting more-or-less peacefully for years, Zeon launched a surprise attack using their devastatingly effective new enormous humanoid combat vehicles known as mobile suits, catching the Federation completely off guard, decimating the Federation's military and then proceeding to wipe out half of humanity with a combination of nerve gas, nuclear weapons, and intentionally deorbiting a space colony as a makeshift Orbital Bombardment. When this failed to bring the Federation to its knees, Zeon follows up by invading Earth.

Months later, after the war has dragged into a stalemate, the Federation is testing a new warship (an assault carrier named the White Base) and a highly advanced mobile suit known as the Gundam when they come under attack by a small Zeon force. Local resident Amuro Ray, an Ordinary High-School Student, ends up Falling into the Cockpit and piloting the Gundam to fend off the Zeon attack. With most of the Federation staff killed during the battle, Amuro and a group of surviving locals are forced to crew the White Base themselves in order to survive.

"After spending a year on Earth, Loran has become good friends with Sochie and Kihel, daughters of the prestigious Heim family, and he looks forward to fully integrating into Earth society. But before Loran gets the chance to make his report, the Moonrace launch a surprise attack. Earth's primitive airplanes are no match for the superior power of the Moonrace's mobile suits. However, in the midst of the initial attack, Loran and Sochie uncover a long-forgotten relic: a white mobile suit. As a Moonrace, Loran is quickly able to grasp the basics of piloting it, but by doing so, he inadvertently places himself in the middle of a war."

"Made possible by the immense power of the PlayStation 3 system, 'Mobile Suit Gundam' will take gamers right into the futuristic war zones, brought to life by both CG quality high-definition graphics and ultra realistic destruction physics," said Naruo Uchida, NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.'s Vice President. "Along with stylized gameplay and stunning graphics, the opportunity to experience firsthand the epic mobile suit warfare will surely excite any sci-fi fan."
