Do X-sendfile + mod_compress work?

We are using mod_compress and x-sendfile with php for download
service. The static files could be zipped and downloaded, and php
files could be zipped and downloaded with readfile() function.
But if x-sendfile are used, the file could not be zipped. So I doubt
do X-sendfile + mod_compress work? Or we must compress the file before
presenting it to lighty?

PHP: 5.2.6
Lighty: 1.4.20
