Lead Free solder - what are your opiniions and what are the alternatives?

Let us know your opinions on lead free soldering and have you found

As far as I am aware, the directive to use leadfree solder applies
only to manufacturers. I believe we are OK using lead/tin solder for
hobby use. This is important because I have found that lead free
solders require a higher temperature to work which means buying a new
soldering iron.
