Dear all,

I am pleased to announce that future of Lightning does not exist in the world of 4D components.

I don’t find components to be as portable as they used to, what with compiling on one machine and it not working on another due to a number of reasons that I really shouldn’t care about.

So going forward, Lightning is a 4D Class (.4DM file). You need to use Project Mode in 4D to use Classes, that is one restraint, another is that Lightning V6 is only compatible with 4D V20R5 and upwards because it uses all of the latest features, particularly the Singleton class.

V6 will work with your V5 app after some (what I would call) minor changes, you should not need to change any of your WebFolder stuff, just some 4D calls.

If you want to have a glance at the beta code of the V6 class, it is attached. If you want to use it, you will either have to figure it out or wait for a demo!

What’s New in V6, should I bother?

The most important new feature is that Lightning is thread safe (can be run in preemptive processes).

Another nice feature is that you can use all of the 4D Tags as a hybrid approach to developing your web app.

A number of the improvements have been made after working on a big project for Transport for London and feeling that certain things could be bettered.

This is free, open source software. You have no obligation to use it or provide any feedback whatsoever (unless it’s nice).

A demo will be arriving some time soon…

Cheers,

Graham

Hello Graham,
I'm trying unsuccessfully to upgrade from v5 to v6.
Do you have a v6 demo available?

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Fabrice

I have no demo as such, but have a working project which I may be able to create a demo version.
