Hello,

I'm trying to use output from Magic Music Visuals (https://magicmusicvisuals.com/) as a Spout source in Lightjams, but it only says "0 fps / inactive. No active grid is using this media" on the media monitor, even though I have the media active on a parameter. I have tried using webcam as an input the same way, and that works. I have also installed Spout itself and run the SpoutReceiver demo, which receives the spout data fine. (It says "DirectX 11 : 791x418 [BGRA]" in the information box right now.)

Magic supports Spout v1 and Spout v2, I've tried both with the same results. I also tried with the SpoutSender demo from Spout itself, this has the exact same results too.

My machine is a fairly new Dell G5 15 gaming laptop, with a Nvidia GTX1050Ti graphics card. I've pinned Lightjams to the Nvidia graphics card when running to see if that had any impact.

Any idea what else I can try to get it working?

Hi

>> No active grid is using this media"

Makes sure to assign your media (Spout) to a grid's background and then make sure this grid is active.

OK, that was easy!! Sorry, I really missed that this was the way to do it :) (I was fumbling about with the "color palette extracted from media" manipulator instead, but this is way better.)

Thank you SO much for a great product and for this incredibly quick reply :-) Hopefully it can at least help someone else who might wonder about the same thing.

Regards

Just to expand on this a bit, I guess what confused me was the fact that it doesn't seem possible to use Spout input as media for the "Ambilight" example project and that type of media HSI extraction: https://www.lightjams.com/video.html

Or am I wrong? Is there some other way in addition to the background media?

Hi Øyvind,

You should be able to use the Spout input as a background for the Ambilight sample project,

What step of the process are you having problems with?

You can use any media for the ambilight. The media just needs to be "active" by being used as a grid's background. When inactive, the Spout input is disconnected to avoid wasting resources. It's the same thing when playing a video file. When not in use, the video stops. The exception is with a live input like a webcam. Since it's slow to connect (1 second or more), it always stays connected.

Finally had some time to look at this again. (Played 2 shows with lightjams this weekend, so I had to focus on getting that up and running first! Will post videos later...) Anyway, thanks for your input - I see that I do get some relevant action when setting it as a background to the ambient light grids as well now, yes. I was just confused with regards to the https://www.lightjams.com/video.html walkthrough, which only talks about those 9 color zones, not the background bit. Thanks again to the both of you!

You're right. The Ambilight is usually used with a capture device. I'll add a note if it's used with another media type.
