Hi All,

Here are 2 small projects using a Blizzard Lighting Pixellicious 2 light with Lightjams software to control it.  This light is about 1 foot square and consists of a 12 X 12 matrix of 144 RGB LEDs, each individually addressable.  With suitable optics you can project this light onto a surface to about 20 feet across.

Here is a video of my drum set controlling about 18 different patterns displayed, simultaneously, on the light: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quPBoRsDywM&feature=youtu.be

Here is a video of the light used as a 12 channel audio spectrograph displaying a short clip from an upcoming film:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEkApx_lse0&feature=youtu.be

Hi Jeff,

The videos seem to be unavailable. Can you change a setting or something?

Mathieu,

Sorry about that!   I changed the settings so they should work now.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. You're using MIDI to trigger your patterns, right?

Yes.  I have several Roland electronic drum sets.

I did a punk rock show a little while ago using an Alesis USB drum trigger interface to Lightjams. Have you ever tried using triggers and acoustic drums?

I have not tried triggers with acoustic drums.  I originally started triggering lights with MIDI signals using custom made lights that responded directly to MIDI signals so the triggering was very precise and never missed a note or a drum head or cymbal hit.  My understanding is that drum triggers on acoustic drums are not as precise as electronic drums and sometimes do not trigger when a drum is played.  Also how do you trigger acoustic cymbals?

For the purpose of that show, cymbals were not used. The kick and snare drove the color changes and a bunch of other stuff. If I was going to try that I think I would use an onbeat() function attached to the frequency bands of the cymbals. One could also try attaching triggers to the cymbal stands, but both of those things would not work well on a tight noisy stage. Latency is the arch nemesis of electronic drums... and Lightjams. However, an electronic drum set is just trigger to midi on drums that make no noise. You could get some $2 triggers on ebay, attach them to an acoustic set, plug in you midi and Lightjams and it will look the same. :) (minus cymbals)
