why does hash_ring use digest instead hexdigest?

Hi

I wonder why hash_ring uses in 1.2 md5.digest instead of hexdigest. In
an earlier version of hash_ring hexdigest was used.

Any reasons why this has been changed?

I think this is a refactoring "bug" (when I switched from md5 to
hashlib).
Other than this, there isn't a reason.
