Is the common way to securing lightcloud simply modifying iptables and restricting access or is there a better way?

Exposing lightcloud to the internet is generally very bad security
practice and I would advice on binding only on the local network.

You'd have to open to other ips if you're running more than one node, no?

No, not if they are running locally and on the same subnet.
