There are also many parodies of the song, including a parody called "Ugly Girl", with an unverified author (often wrongly credited to "Weird Al" Yankovic, Adam Henderson, or Jack Off Jill). German duo Lynne & Tessa made a lip-synched Internet video of the song in 2006, and on British Indian sketch comedy show Goodness Gracious Me, where a version titled "Punjabi Girl" was featured in the radio series and later on television.[136] In 2012, the song was parodied in an Australian lamb advertising campaign, relying on the Australian use of the term "barbie" to refer to the outdoor barbecue popularly held in Australia. The advertisement starred Melissa Tkautz and Sam Kekovich.[137] In 2014, the song was used in the South Park episode "Cock Magic". Ava Max recorded a version with new lyrics, titled "Not Your Barbie Girl", in 2018.[138]

There's something about the song "Barbie Girl" that stands the test of time. From the sugary pop vocals and infectious ear worm that sticks in your head, while at the same time being a smutty & irreverent take on a toy for little girls; to it's celebration of artificiality, almost serving as an update to Madonna's "Material Girl" but a little more sneering & cynical; to even little things like the use of random Japanese kanji in the title screen (as a stylistic choice) which is all the rage now--from Post Malone to The Weeknd--to the entirety of the vaporwave genre. Even the pitched up vocals seems designed to annoy, and although I don't want to overstate and say that this was the beginnings of hyperpop as we know it, I do feel "Barbie Girl" certainly informed a lot of what was to come in the genre.

"It's tongue-in-cheek," Nystrøm told Rolling Stone of the song in 2022. "If you want to see the layers to it, there's all the layers you want. But we kind of took the piss out of the Pamela Anderson 'Baywatch' perfect picture with silicon boobs. We wanted to take the piss out of that kind of perfect girl."

According to "Barbie" lead Margot Robbie, Gerwig found a clever way to still include "Barbie Girl" in their new movie without explicitly working it into the script. "I was like, 'Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can't do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua's "Barbie Girl." It has to be in there,'" the actor recalled to Rolling Stone in an interview published on June 26. "And [Greta] was like, 'Don't worry, we're going to find a cool way to incorporate it.'" Which she did when she surprised Robbie with Minaj and Spice's remixed track. Robbie remembered: "I was like, 'Together? Are you joking?!' I just knew immediately that all my girlfriends were going to lose their minds."

Few songs were are infectious in the '90s as Danish-Norwegian group Aqua's "Barbie Girl." The song, brimming with '90s Euro dance-pop vibes, was on constant rotation when it came out back in 1997. For us young Millennials, "Barbie Girl" was probably just a silly song about a toy we all played with growing up. However, 20 years later, "Barbie Girl" is neither feminist or fun as we might remember. Something about it feels gross when you're listening to it, as if the innocence of a doll like Barbie shouldn't be associated with lyrics like, "I'm a blond bimbo girl in a fantasy world." Gross, right?

Unlike other actually feminist properties that use stereotypically girly female characters to subvert expectations and make smart feminist commentary (I'm looking at you, Legally Blonde), "Barbie Girl" feels hollow and discomfiting. Devoid of any real meaning about what it's like to be a woman in a world that seeks to objectify us, dripping in sexual innuendo that only serves the male gaze, and yes, lackluster in the empowerment department, "Barbie Girl" fails to offer women anything fun or fresh on its 20th birthday.

"When she was like, 'Guess who's going to do the remix of Aqua's "Barbie Girl"? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.' I was like, 'Together? Are you joking?!' I just knew immediately that all my girlfriends were going to lose their minds," Robbie said.
