Dear all,

first of all, I'm sorry for writing english, but my Dutch still needs
much improvement :-) I'm a german guy who will move to the Leiden area
in about 1 month.

My problem concerns the storage of my ligfiets. There's no storage
room in my future appartment and parking it in the appartment is also
not really an option. Hence, I'm looking for some safe & dry storage
place. Given the typical size of dutch appartments I guess there are
more people having this problem. How did you solve it?

I have seen that there are public parking lots for bikes at some train
station, e.g. Leiden Centraal. Is it safe to store a bike there? Or is
it more for the really old-bikes one doesn't care about so much?

I'm happy about any response :-)

With best regards,

Mathias

Hello Mathias,

Not a complete answer; im no living near leiden, but a sugestion:

Public parkings is possible, mostly if your bike fits in a bike
parking, they consider it a bike. The most of this parkings are garded
and for parking at train stations you have to pay. There are mostly
public parkings at realway-stations and in town centra (not all i
think) For parking for a long time you might look at more lokal
places. For that people need to know the area. Street or center of the
street might do. (Course this is a public place, don't be to exact
with the adress I think. )

Enjoy Holland, Leiden has nice places to bike at.

If you live close to the station, Pinker thinks it is a good solution to park at a guarded bike parking there. You can get a chip card for the parking that will cost you 100 euro a year.

What kind of ligfiets do you have? Is it an open bike or an velomobiel?

You can park an open bike at the train station, but I would choose for
the ones with security. Though, they are not free. Furthermore the
train station is not a place where you want to park your bike
permanently. Especially when you need to pay for it.

In some towns you can rent a storage room or garage. Maybe you can
share the costs with a neighbour, friend or colleague?
At your appartment, do you have a community garden where you could
place your bike (out of sight)?

Most bigger stations are switching to automated parkings. The work with either an ov chip card or a chipknip. They are open 24/7.

In Leiden the older houses tend to have high ceilings. Can you hang your bike high?
"Bike lifts" for € 15 are available at bikeshops or on-and-off at DIY-stores/Lidl/Aldi.

Matthias,
In Den Haag CS I parked my ligfiets in the public-zone (no
survaillance), up to three times a week for several months on a row.
Since januari I use my car between home-work.
The bikeparking uses rails to store bikes and as a precaution I put my
ligfiets in the highest rail. Bare in mind: The ligfiets is no bike
for the cycle-shed-pricelist.
It catagorizes as a bromfiets: 4,50/day for a bromfiets, instead of
1,20/day for a bike!
While the Den Haag CS is underconstruction, the public cycle-shed-area
is for free.
See my bike parked: http://rapt0065.webs.com/
It fits like a glove!

As for safety/vandalism: No complaints; lots of other bikes at a more
convenient level.

Kind regards,

At home I live in a 12-floor appartment with a small storeroom for
tools, bikes, x-mas-stuff, etcetera.
Periodically Aldi and Lidl have a cycle-"elevator" in their assortment
(EUR 4,99 Lidl) Works like a charm.
The link below refers to 18-24 march 20??; probably this year in march
they will have the bikelift too.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!
May be we can lend a hand,...

Dear all,

thanks for all the helpful informations! The problem by storing the
bike in the house consists not only in the available room inside, but
also in the fact that there are steep and narrow stairs to the
entrance of the appartment. There is no chance, that I can carry my
(heavy) bike over these stairs.

Concerning your questions: I have a ligfiets, not a velomobil. It's a
Zox26 Low, hence it is not particularly long and should fit into a
standard bikes rail. My appartment is not situated directly in Leiden,
but in Katwijk (nearby the badstraat). So if anybody knows a
particular chance there... However, since I have an additional upright-
bike for daily use, it would be o.k. if I store my ligfiets in some km
distance (at least in the beginning).

Maybe one of you can give me an indication where to put an
announcement that I look for a part of a storage. In the supermarket?
In the web (if so which page is popular?)? On street lamps?

Thanks again for your kind help!

Mathias

Mathias,

I am living in Leiden and I'm very familiar in Katwijk.
First of all, parking your bike in Leiden at Central Station is
possible in a guarded place called "Fietspoint Oldenburger". They are
situated underneath Leiden Central Station. The web-address is
http://www.fietspoint.com/stalling
When living in Katwijk use bus 32, 33, 37 or 38 to Leiden (max. half
an hour travelling)

If you want to park your bike nearby (in Katwijk) try one of the local
bicycle-repearshops, they might have some place for you, or they might
know someone who has some room for a bike.

As soon as you're in Leiden/Katwijk, please send me an e-mail so I can
show you the area.

Greetings, Robert-Jan
