AutoComplete (AutoSuggest?)

There are several threads on this list discussing how to use
the AutoComplete widget without locking to the suggested items.

I'm wodering if anyone has come up with a proper or clean
way to resolve this, without injecting manual javascript to
patch the AutoComplete widget?

(All the forums threads I could find seem to die with wither a hackish
solution
or none at all.)

I'm a bit pressed with time however so I might be a week or two before I have time
to take a look at it.
