First off I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. The more I
looked into Lift & Scala the more interested I became and wanted to
learn more.

I'm coming into Lift and Scala with a background in PHP
(codeigniter) , Ruby on Rails and Javascript. So I just wanted to get
some feedback from the community to get some suggestions on the best
place to get started learning lift & scala (books, tutorials, etc).

Also are there any Lift/Scala user groups in the Austin,Texas area?

I'm looking forward to being an active member in the Lift and Scala
community.

Regards,
Bryan Newton

Hello and Welcome :)!

The best place to get started, is probably this mailing list.
Since the problems you will find, someone else had before :)! Atleast
that approach helped me alot on understanding Lift.

Books:
http://simply.liftweb.net/
http://exploring.liftweb.net/master/index.html
http://www.manning.com/perrett/

The official Lift wiki:
https://www.assembla.com/wiki/show/liftweb

http://liftweb.net/download
http://liftweb.net/getting_started

With those links it shouldn't be a problem to get started.

Greetings,

Marcus

Hi Bryan,

Im somewhat new to scala myself. Id like to share what has worked for me.  In addition to the books listed below, it's worthwhile getting into the fundamentals of scala as well. To do that, I recommend

Beginning Scala by David Pollack:

Scala in Action:

Scala in Depth:

It's also valuable to hunt for scala blog entries and such. Im definitely still on the beginner side but I do feel the comfort level with the lang growing.

Lift in Action will soon be released properly (as opposed to MEAP only), so that may be of interest as many people have found it to be really helpful when getting started with Lift:

Thanks, Tim

Thank you guys for all of the feedback.

So far I'm purchased the the following books to get started.

Beginning Scala by David Pollack:
http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Scala-Experts-Voice-Source/dp/1430219...
Lift in Action
http://manning.com/perrett/

I think I will start a blog to talk about my experience learning with
Scala and Lift. I'm sure I will be back with questions as I get into
this more.

Thanks Again,
bnewton

Thanks for buying my book.  I think $0.72 of your purchase price will make it to my bank account after 9 months (there's a very long delay between the time a book is purchased and the time Apress sends me a check. :-( )

The book was written and tested against Scala 2.7.4 (2 1/2 years ago).  Many of the examples don't work or don't work as well as they should.

Please feel encouraged to ask any questions about the book in this forum.  I'll do my best to respond.

Thanks!

I'm really, really looking forward to Tim's book. There's also the book that Tyler, Marius and I wrote if you want another resource:
