Hi everybody!
We are two Stanford Ph.D. students who had a great concept back in
June 2010 and wanted to build a system around it. We wanted to do it
in Scala, as we thought that this was the most elegant language out
there at the moment coupled with great performance! We came across
Lift and started playing with it by hacking ProtoUser class 6 months
ago. We ended up rewriting it but over time started to understand Lift
better appreciating its transformative functional approach to web
development! Now, looking back, we are very happy we made the choice
to go with Lift -- it's a great framework with a great community
behind it. We have been closely watching this mailing list for the
last 6 months and got answers to many of our questions. Thanks you
guys!
Now we are proud to announce that after 6 months of development and 3
rewrites of our code base, we have finally officially launched our
service:
http://www.qwhispr.com. Qwhispr is a search engine that uses
social networks like Facebook and Twitter to privately ask your
friends questions and receive answers from your friends and people
they know. With Qwhispr's powerful relaying mechanism, if your friends
can't answer your question, they can relay it to someone they know who
can. Qwhispr puts the 6 degrees of separation to real test, and for
the first time puts online social networks to use for real practical
needs. We believe it will revolutionize the way we use and perceive
social networks.
To those of you curious about our technology stack. We are running
Scala + Lift, on top of MongoDB, hosted on Amazon EC2. The Scala is
coupled with extensive client-side JavaScript logic (the site is
highly interactive, so I suggest you check it out to appreciate Lift's
functionality and our 3000 lines of Javascript code). We take heavy
usage of Lift's built-in ajax support, callbacks, and most recently,
even wiring. We plan to also utilize Comet Actors in the very near
future. Given Lift's support for internationalization, we plan to
launch Spanish and Russian versions in the next month or so.
I hope Qwhispr will become another success story for Lift!
