Itend to choose 2 or 3 lines, go as far as I can in 1, before I have to pick another to play catchup in. EG. in the german line, I have chosen the bomber line, the BF110/Do217 fighter line, and hte BF109 line.

I think I'll try Realistic Battles with it. It is a real joy just flying with the stick compared to the mouse. I'm not so sure I particularly care about my success rate given the pure joy of it so far.

As for researching, I used to rush through the trees but soon realized that I have much more fun and thus success when I am flying planes I like. Due to how the RP penalty works, I would advise to work your way slowly up the tree, find a plane or better yet a combination of planes that you enjoy in an Era and use them to unlock a couple of planes in the next Era. You'll usually get better RP flying planes that you know and like. Look out for BR traps, planes that have a very high or low BR for their Era, as the MM might throw you in for a loop if you use them (the FW 190 A-5/U2 is a prime example, it messes up your Era III line-up if you simply add it as soon as you get it).

Take your time to learn the game. An experienced player in an inferior plane has a good chance of beating an inexperienced player in a superior plane. Especially at low BRs, you can hurry through the tree - I would advise you not to.

Teamwork is OP. If you have a group of players to fly with you, researching and especially grinding upgrades will be much easier. Experienced players can also help you build good line-ups, tell you about planes you face and so on.

I wouldn't touch a joystick in RB or AB as what you give up in accuracy is huge in War Thunder. As well as giving up the instructor will expose yourself to more stalls, etc. Sim is much better for it I heard..

As for researching; just remember you don't have to fly everything in the tree. You can unlock, buy, shelve, and keep playing what you like as long as it is within one tier of your target vehicle for research. Beyond one tier you get hit with RP penalties with the module grind and taking a less effective aircraft isn't worth it in my opinion. The reward bonus for researching the next in line to what you are playing; isn't worth the frustration of playing something you don't want to play and having to module grind it. Just pay attention to reward percentages of what you want to fly and grind it out. If you pick the right Aircraft to fly in regards to reward percentage it is an easy grind up until tier IV.

If you're flying in Ground RB.. you'll need bombs. Fighter bombers and bombers. For the point system bombers and fighters are separate point categories for spawn point system and are increased separately on subsequent spawns. If I want to get in a bomber right away; I'll take an AAA truck and blast into a cap on conquest and domination. The points you earn for the cap will give you what you need to get in a Fighter Bomber (or Bomber) and you can take out those heavies. If I fail to do that; I can easily fall back on a tank with the points I held in reserve.

2. Do not force yourself to ace every plane initially, especially era 1-2. you'll ace planes you like and fly a lot naturally, but planes like for example all the stukas or Il2 if you are not going to be flying them a lot then just unlock them, try them and move on.

3. Now here's the trick, mid tier 4 onwards you'll hit a wall grinding wise, planes will require a lot of rp to unlock. Go back to era 1-3 and start playing all the vehicles you skipped earlier and ace them. Every level of modifications you unlock you get a sum of rp bonus to whatever you are researching. That lump sum is not affected by the % deduction normal rp is when flying a plane much lower then the one you are researching and it will go very nicely to helping you push through your late tiers. especially ther tier 1-2 planes as you can spade them and get a very nice sum of rp in 1-3 games. Its not going to magically make you leap ahead rp wise but it makes the grind much easier as flying low tier planes is less punishing in terms of gaining rp and there tends to be a lot of them. So you could spend an afternoon flying 10+ games in a fw 190 a8 to unlock the d9, or you could ace the entire stuka line up in less then 10 games and gain the same amount of rp towards the d9.

I've used this to boost unlocking the following planes: HO 229 I unlocked by aceing all my me410s, b29 I got by doing all the corsairs, pby and kingfishers. first r2y2 by aceing all my zeroes and 1 ki 84. Soviets I almost never fly tier iv but I have all the la and yak fighters unlocked by aceing all my yaks, migs and low tier Lalas.

Quick warning: This is obviously a one time use, when you end up aceing every plane in a nation except for maybe era 5 then the grind goes back to being painfully slow. which is where I am with Germany and the Arado 3c :(

here's my stat page and you can see both the amount of vehicles unlock and the amount aced is in a sort of pairing rising together (especially germany) the only exception is japan who I mostly did by flying my a6m5 ko riesen to death during a period when it was godly.

If you want to research the first three ranks of the Russian tree quickly, I'd suggest using the Yak-9M. I believe that it's the least expensive of all the premium packs. I think that it's rather OP for the BR it's at, but I have a lot of fun with it (probably because it's OP mwahahahaha).

The best way to grind at the moment is to use a premium plane with premium on RB. Just make sure that you play safe whilst getting kills. There's no point trying to head-ons as you won't be able to utilize your premium rewards efficiently.

No kidding. The aircraft just starts swimming back and forth. Can't target anything accurately. Are the aircraft marked in RB Air bots? Tanks aren't marked at all in RB. Just wondering what the deal is.

AB joystick is viable (I fly AB exclusively with joystick from Lv1 to now), although you need to put in alot more effort than mouse pilot in terms of aiming. (You are going to trim your aircraft properly in order to get decent results)

Joystick requires quite a bit of aptitude and practice, its pretty normal to fly like a drunk walrus when you are starting out. If joystick is your thing, keep at it and your flying will improve! :salute:

Maybe I'm just biased because I started with the Viper. Hornet gives you the whole carrier ops thing which is cool, but I find the Viper easier to learn and use the features of. Plus it has the SFW. You'll see what I mean.

I'm the opposite of SickSidewinder9. The F-18 shows you what the MFD buttons are going to do and generally you don't have to try to remember a bunch of controller stuff and how to get to the menu you need because it displays what it's doing. Probe and drogue is easier for AAR (I can do both). I'd also say if you go F-16 you really want an F-16 throttle to maximize ease of use vs the F-18 a more general throttle works fine.

If you're a naval aviation guy the answer is semi obvious, because there are really only three full-fidelity ship capable aircraft. Oh, and the overweight wanker. It doesn't have a launch bar, though.

Right now the F-18 is hands down the air frame I have the most hours in, by an order of magnitude, and the reason I got into DCS, but I own them all. Lately I've been flying the F-16 for no particular reason, other than it's cool. The rest I might have controls configured for, and I might be able to take off and land, but I probably can't find where I'm going.

F-15C is an exclusive AA platform. You can't carry any air to ground ordnance (only amraams, sparrows and sidewinders) and the Mirage doesn't have any guided AG weapon. You have to rely on just rockets and dumb bombs. EDIT: you have laser guided bombs but you can't self lase.

For me the Mirage 2000 is the perfect blend of modern stuff without being too modern, if you catch my drift. You have decent radar and missiles, but still no Fox 3s and no computers with wings like later planes as the Hornet, Viper or Mudhen. This is, of course, personal preference. You should go for what you like.

I have the feeling that the viper is in a more finished state and with less bugs, but also the hornet has a number of advanced features that the viper doesn't have. But overall I think the hornet is a better choice to invest your time in, but be ready to some frustration with bugs and incomplete features

Whenever someone asks me which aircraft a newbie should try first, I tell them to choose between the F16, F18, and JF17. But personally, I think it is definitely not wrong to choose F18. It currently has the largest variety of weapons (except for terminally sensitive bombs). And it allows you to experience aircraft carrier-related content, which is something other air force aircraft do not have.

The Mirage 2000 in DCS is an aircraft from the late Cold War, so it is difficult to play its role in many PVE servers. The F15C only simulates a small part of the avionics and can only conduct air-to-air combat. Personally, they are not suitable for learning as a first aircraft. I think it would be better to choose one after you are completely familiar with a multi function aircraft.

The latter is probably by far the most beginner friendly, but won't be considered by most for some reasons. Reasons which about 80 percent of should have the prefix "hurr durr". But it also has real limitations in payload, range, and sporting a variant of MiG-29's engine, it does smoke enough to be easily traceable in the sky.

Mirage 2000 is a fun thing indeed. And is, for me, a better mix of old and new. But it's fit for the multirole moniker is less certain than the above 3. It can carry rockets and dumb bombs with cool delivery modes, and laser guided bombs that require an external laser source for targeting as Mirage can't use a targeting pod itself.

There's also Razbam's relatively recent F-15E. It's less dogfight friendly than F-15C, being heavier and draggier. But it has the best air to ground radar in DCS. It's in relatively early development though, and even when complete it won't have as diverse payload options as the first 3, but will be better in strike missions especially in bad weather and night. It can carry a pretty insane amount of bombs.
