We are looking into having participants fill out forms on an Ipad using REDCap and were wondering if anyone is already doing this? I have a few questions.
1. Is there an app or a specific mobile version for REDCap or do we have to sign in through a browser?
2. Do people use surveys or data entry as a method for participants to fill out forms. It seems like the easiest way is to log in and create a record for the participant, then open the forms you want them to fill out as surveys. Does anyone know if this is what’s being done clinically?
3. Is there a particular tablet that works better or worse for this? It seems like we can only order an Ipad Air through the tech center, but those are a bit pricey.
4. Finally, is there a good way to limit the other things that people can do on a tablet? It’s rather unlikely for parents to leave REDCap and look through the internet, but just to be safe, it’s easier to limit access as much as possible.
Thanks in advance for any feedback,

These are great questions.
I think they’re on the leading edge of both our utilization of REDCap (and Epic) and tablets.
1) I don’t believe there’s a special mobile version…but I’d be surprised if we’re the only ones envisioning the need
2) I suspect this is going to become a difficult issue depending on what’s being collected. If there is no PHI, probably not a big deal. If there is, participants would need to be consented and notified the PHI would be stored…and this would need IRB approval. If it’s primarily as part of clinical practice, then you have to mix Epic in, too.
3) I don’t know…but there may be additional difficulties relating to what is collected with regards to Lifespan management of the device and how the device connects to the internet to get to REDCap.
4) An important consideration to mitigating the risk posed…relating to #3
I have a feeling we’re all about to go through some significant growing pains with regards to PHI, ePHI, HIPAA, IRB, consent, REDCap, EPIC, and technology.
I’m not sure what the next steps should be, but I just had a very in-depth discussion with Pat Houser last week. That conversation lead me to believe we need fresh thinking and additional training…and this will need to be part of it.
I’m going to start discussions.
