variable naming

Is there any way to change a variable name once data is entered without data loss? My RC misnamed a variable as "XYZ date 1" rather than "XYZ day 1" and this is making it difficult for my statistician to run statistical analysis on exported data for all days without having to clean up this variable each time the data is exported.
