Hi,

I am creating a survey to be administered to residents at Lifespan and have some questions. I tried to find answers through the forum as well as in the FAQ section in Redcap but I apologize if these are duplicate questions.

1) The survey will be sent out as a link via Lifespan emails, not the Redcap function. We are not planning on having assigned participant ID as the survey is optional and open to any resident respondents. I know that Redcap will automatically number each entry. Is there any way to limit duplicate entries aside from using a participant ID? I suppose the survey link I would be sending out would not be unique and redcap does not collect IP addresses.

2) Is there a way to put a visual indicator of survey progress as the respondent is filling out the survey? I know survey monkey has that function but I have not seen it on Redcap.

3) Is it possible for the respondent to resume a Redcap survey at a later time?

4) If I need to duplicate a survey for the purposes of tracking responses over time after an intervention, is the easiest way to do this is by downloading the CSV form for the original survey then uploading it under a new instrument? When I try to do this, I get many error messages about the content of my CSV document.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Zoe,

1.) I believe if the link is open to anyone, there is no way to prevent repeat responders; even if it used an IP address, that would cause difficulties in some contexts (different subjects completing forms on same terminal for instance).

2.) I know what you are talking about. I do not believe it has that capability, yet.

3.) Yes. There is a save button which assigns a code for the participant to enter in when they return.

4.) Yes, you can make a new project by downloading a previous project/instrument. I would have to see the error message to help you further (can you send me a screen shot?). Also, a perhaps better solution is to keep the survey in the same project, but set it up as a longitudinal project (use same instrument over time within the same project).

Feel free to contact me/us if you have additional questions.

Best,

Grayson

Hi Zoe,

1. I believe Grayson is correct that this is not possible using a public access link. I think this may be possible using the REDCap function to invite participants so that the survey is limited to their email, but not including any identifying information in your survey. See the following from the FAQ:
"Q: Can I collect anonymous survey data from participants?
Responses can be collected anonymously using either the Public Survey Link or the Participant Contact List. For either method, the survey questionnaire must not contain any questions asking the participants for identifying data (ex: What is your email? name? address?).

If using the Participant Contact List, you must not enter unique values into the "Participant Identifier (optional)" field. The Participant Identifier field links the email address to the survey responses. It is also recommended to keep access to the Invite Participants tool restricted since a small number of respondents would be easily identifiable from the Contact List and the View Responses pages."

2. This is from the FAQ:
"Q: For surveys with multiple pages, is there a progress indicator on the survey?
Yes. There is a “Page # of #” at the top right of the survey, so respondents know how many pages they have left. The progress bar is not a feature of REDCap."

3. This is from the FAQ:
"Q: Can survey respondents save, leave, and then go back to a survey to complete the questions?
Yes. You must enable the "Save and Return Later" option in the Modify Survey Settings section of the Project Setup tab. This option allows participants to save their progress and return where they left off any time in the future. They will be given a validation code, which they will be required to enter in order to continue the survey.

If participants forget their validation code and contact you, you have access to participants codes on their Survey Results page. You will only be able to distribute lost codes if the survey responses capture identifiers. If the survey is "anonymous" you will not be able to recover the validation code for the participant."

4. I think Grayson is correct here too, but it depends on what you're trying to do. The likely reason you're getting an error message is if you upload the same dictionary as a new instrument you would have 2 variables with the same name in your dataset and REDCap will not allow this. If you're trying to follow individuals over time then you should probably use a longitudinal setup. However, this will require that you track participants and thus it cannot be anonymous. If you are planning on re-administering the survey each year to the same people, but you want each survey to be anonymous, then I suggest you make it a different project.

Hope that helps,
