Dearest Darling friends,
I read this scenario a few days ago. It touched something deep within.
Dukhimal was fed up of his continuous failures. Not able to feel dignity for himself, he was unable to face people. He felt he does not deserve to live. He decides to commit suicide. At around 5 pm, he walks up to the 20th floor of the highest building in his city, wanting to jump from there and commit suicide.
However, the door to the terrace was locked. He decided to walk down, cross the road and jump down from the bridge overflowing the river on the other side of the road. As he walked down the steps, he wondered if this locked door was testing his resolve to die or was it God's sign indicating he should continue to live.
He devised an interesting test to find out the truth.
He told himself, "Before I reach the railings of the bridge, if any person smiles at me, I will see it as an indication of God's will for me to live."
The question to all the darling readers of 'Life School Message (LSM)' is "If you had crossed his path that evening as he was walking towards the railings of the bridge, would you have caused him to live?"
Would you have given him that life changing smile?
As you were in a hurry to reach somewhere, you wanted to overtake him, your shoulder would have brushed his shoulders. He would have felt a push. He already feels unworthy. Would you look at his face, be concerned, see his anguish and turmoil....and give him an encouraging smile? Or would you frown, glare at him, show him a mean face and move ahead as if wordlessly telling him he IS unworthy?
If you were coming from the opposite direction, as you crossed him, would your eyes have met his? Would you have been interested in him? Would you have seen his sagging shoulders, the lost look, the resigned stubble, shabby clothes as if thrown over his body, and realised he NEEDS your smile? Would you have shared your understanding, healing and encouraging smile??
When I see people walking on the roads, waiting at the reception of an office, driving to work, standing in a line, jostling to buy popcorn in a cinema theatre, shopping at the latest mall in town, I see more frowns than smiles.
I agree there must be reasons to have that frown. I also believe we have much more reasons to drop that useless frown and carry a smile. Experience teaches me the toughest of situations in life become easy when I carried a smile with me and within me. Experiences teach me, the simplest of trifles becomes a complex issue when I dropped that smile and replaced it with an ugly frown.
People have shared with me some cherished moments in their life for I had smiled at them! It is indeed uplifting, amusing and embarrassing to know my smile had made their day. It also proves to me the power of smile. A smile is like a welcome sign. A smile shows here is a friend. A smile shows forgiveness. A smile shows to others they are important. A smile shows appreciation. A smile creates memories to be cherished for a life time. Remember get-togethers like re-unions and marriages? The photographer present there always insists on you having a smile, isn't it?
Most importantly, a smile shows I am a positive person. It makes me ready to love, to live, to learn....It makes me focus my energies on productive purposes. It makes me realise, 'Life is Beautiful'.
By the way, have you ever heard of negative people achieving glorious things in life? Have you ever felt motivated because of the presence of negative people who arm themselves with frowns? Have you ever seen negative people inspiring others? In a tough situation, have you ever seen a negative person smiling? Have you ever felt people sharing the best thing they like about a person is their frown? Have you ever heard employees sharing the reason they come to work is the boss never smiles and always carries the deepest of frowns?
A frown makes me lose so much. A smile enables me so much. It was not a frown but a smile could have saved Dukhimal's life (remember Dukhimal in the beginning of this mail?). So, lets keep on smiling. Who knows a Dukhimal might cross our path today!
Negative thinkers never achieve anything glorious. Positive thinkers do. Cement the positivity deep within by smiling away to glory. If you have reasons, smile! If you do not have reasons, still smile and reasons will appear. If you know how to carry a smile, you will never be a Dukhimal. You might walk up 20 floors for exercise but not for the reason our protagonist had.
With love, prayers and best wishes,
naren
