Dear Life group Members,

The new trade deal with the US speaks of significant imports of Cattle feed from the US into India .

I think this needs to be discussed widely

I have serious reservation about feeding "feed" of any kind to a ruminant, after a farmer in New Zealand asked me basic questions about physiology and economics, 40 years ago while visiting his dairy farm.

All New Zealand dairy farmers operate on ZERO cattle feed and extensive grazing (ad libidum self feeding and self watering)  and are the world's most economical milk producers in the World and also compete on productivity for every breed that they rear.

Yes, quite true. The US is sitting on an enormous excess of GM soy and corn which it desperately needs to export. This excess is basically the driver of the spread of industrial livestock farming and is heavily subsidized.

An extract from my upcoming publication on "Managing livestock within Planetary Boundaries":

The cultivation of ‘row crops’ (soy and corn) is heavily subsidized in the US and farmers form an influential lobby that no government dares to alienate. Farmers, as well as crop and animal scientists have been indoctrinated with the idea that they need to continuously increase yields to feed the world, although the theory of food and even protein shortages has been largely debunked (Abramovoy et al, 2025). If some of the land that is used to produce the excess could be rewilded or regenerated by means of grazing, this would make a major contribution not only to biodiversity conservation, but also to the livelihoods of farmers in the countries at the receiving end.

By quoting example of Newziland you are missing the point that climatic climax vegetation of Newziland is perennial grassland just like prairie this climax is not in our Indian sub continent
