Dear All,

with the kind support of quite a few of you, we had put together the attached map of pastoralist groups of India which in turn was based on an initial map put together by the Desert Resource Institute.

We would be very grateful for any comments and corrections, so this map is as uptodate and accurate as possible.

Also, this map is published under a Creative Commons Licence and anybody is welcome to use it to further the cause, but please give LPP/LIFE Network as source.

Thanks and kind regards,
Ilse

Dear Ilse,
amazing work, thank you! I can't see pigs depicted in Assam (the Doom breed). I understand the ethnic group keeping them is also called Doom (from http://www.jakraya.com/journal/pdf/26-vriArticle_6.pdf).
Best,
Pablo

Deer Ilse,

I saw  your mail and the "Map of Pastoralist groups in India" rather late - please accept belated compliments for this excellent effort - compliments also to all the members who contributed.

I presume you and other members are aware of = " a call for papers for the special issue titled ‘Pastoralism in the Indian sub-continent’ in the open access peer-reviewed journal Pastoralism – research, policy and practise, published by Springer Nature in UK, USA and Germany https://pastoralismjournal.springeropen.com." and would plan to contribute.

I sincerely wish that a few papers from India get published in this special issue.

 Best wishes.

Datta

Dear All,

if anybody else would like to suggest further changes to the pastoralist map of India, please let us know by the end of this week.

So far we have received comments from Bhavana and Sajjal which will be integrated into the map that can then be shared by all.

Another question: does anybody know of a pastoralist group called Idayan? They are said to be a subgroup of the Yadavas.

Thanks so much for your cooperation!

Ilse

Thank you very much, Bhavana - exactly the kind of feedback we need!

I'll try to get it corrected and then you are welcome to use it on the RLN website.

Cheers,
Ilse

This is awesome, Ilse .

Was wondering though , who are the Lambadani ... if I understand correctly do you mean  the Lambani ( used in Karnataka) or lambadi ( used in Ap and Telangana) you refer too ? If this is correct then the Banjaras are the same ... it’s just another name for them .

In Andhra they are called Sugalis  and live mostly in fringe forest villages . You could add maybe  and remove the duplication.

When it done , let me k ow if I can add this on the RLN website

dear Ilse ,
The spellings of Golkar and Lambadas ( Maharashtra)  may need checking ..

also perhaps a foot note that these are the main groups and sometimes other groups may enter pastoralism and exit .. depending on situations .

Best
