Life coaches provide support, encouragement, and motivation to help people make changes. Life coaching provides a positive alternative to therapy or counseling for those who prefer an encouraging, supportive approach without the focus on mental illness. Life Coaches provide a safe, supportive environment in which their clients can feel free to talk about themselves and any problems they are facing without judgment or criticism. Life coaches have been trained in health psychology and understand how thoughts, feelings and behaviors influence health. 

They also understand that physical illnesses may be a manifestation of a psychological problem such as stress, anxiety or depression. Life coaches do not give advice but work with their clients to examine possible causes of problems from different perspectives so that they can develop strategies for making changes in life circumstances or behavior patterns that will lead to better overall health. Life coaches are trained to help their clients work through emotional or learning problems, or other personal issues that affect health and well-being. Life coaching focuses on identifying goals and working towards them in a supportive manner. Life coaches believe in excellence, but recognize everyone needs encouragement to succeed sometimes. Life coaches focus on the present instead of dwelling on the past, helping each client create for themselves an improved future. Life coaches also often use visualization techniques with their clients to help provide motivation by using imagery to evoke strong emotions about the desired outcome of their work together. 

Life coaching is interpersonal training that uses dialogue rather than lecture as its primary mode of instruction; therefore life coach clients are required to play active roles during sessions. Using Socratic questioning to guide life coach clients to discover and use their own inner resources, life coaches challenge clients to be accountable for their behavior and results. Life coaching is a collaborative effort in which the Life Coach's job is not to tell Life Coachees what they should do, but rather to enable Life Coachees come up with solutions themselves. Life Coaches typically have worked in the industry they coach in order to obtain a broad understanding of an issue from multiple perspectives. Life coaches work with individuals, couples, families and businesses who seek assistance with developing communication skills or conflict resolution. Life coaches also help with emotional problems such as managing anxiety or depression, dealing with stress management issues related to career transitions or weight loss goals.
