There are 3 different types of height for truck bed, such as "High Deck", "Full Flat Low" and "Low Deck (Just Low) High DeckFull Flat LowLow Deck (Just Low)
In Japan Full Flat Low" and "Low Deck (Just Row)" exist but no official definition of "High Deck".
However, world buyers call High Deck as positioned high truck bed, and it is very popular. The conditions of these 3 truck beds are summarized as follows.
In addition, Full Flat Low seems not to be recognized abroad, but depending on countries and buyers, it is included in High Deck class though no equipped 16-inch tire.
Difference in recognition can be seen among the countries.
When Leaf Spring is fixed under differential gear, it may get damaged with scratching by bad ground surface as already mentioned.
Therefore, overslang is popular all over the world. Moreover, underslang can be found even among high deck carriers, so be careful. High Deck with overslang is very searched by buyers from all over the world, because it is least affected by road conditions.
Double rear tires are usually equipped to commercial vehicles, but it can be also single tires.
In that case, by increasing the tire size it is supported to capable to withstand heavy weight, so the High Deck with single tire is also looked for.
Because High Deck with single tire is often used in towns for delivery of newspapers in Japan, vehicle conditions are much better than those used in construction sites. There is high demand but less availability.
The red on above two photos indicates differential gear.
If there are two front and rear differential gears, it is 4WD and if one rear gear only, it is 2WD. When checking car underbody on pictures, it is not easy to distinguish if it is front or rear.
In this case, you can find out by checking whether it has "single or double-tires" and more "a muffler".
It is not important, but a 4WD label may stuck on 2WD body.
When I went to Thailand for a business trip, I was shocked to watch 2WD pickup trucks with 4WD sticker. That appeared very common in Thailand.
Again, it may be checked with model codes.
If D is in model code of canter truck, like FD **, it is a 4WD.
If you cannot see with pictures, then you can check in that way. Here is a little story about truck drive.
The trucks sold in Japan are 2WD FR (front engine/rear drive), easier to say rear wheel drive, is the mainstream.
If FF (front engine/front drive) vehicles is used for heavy loading, the propulsive force becomes weak then the tires may be in spinning.
That is why there are many FR vehicles which driving force is brought to heavy rear side.
The last point is to check vehicle condition.
Trucks are considered to have poor condition than passenger cars due to their intended use.
Especially need to pay attention to "rust" and "corrosion" .
As for what kind of rust should be watched, it is still acceptable if the rust remains reddish lightly on the surface. On the other hand, you need attention to the trucks with corrosion holes resulting from deep rust.
But contrarily if you buy a car in bad condition cheaply, the customs duty is cheaper. So, it can be a profitable shopping for you. If you are just in the mechanic world, you indeed can do a good deal.
Equipment which may be equipped to trucks of 4t or more is air brake .
Air brake has greater braking power than hydraulic brake.
Therefore, other than large vehicles equipped with air brakes, there also are 4t medium-sized trucks equipped with air brakes.
If you are planning to purchase a truck more than 4 tons, better check for air brake.
If you foresee heavy loadings, we recommend purchasing a medium-sized truck equipped with air brake. But the price will be a bit high.
Mitsubishi's trucks with air brake are Fuso Fighter and Fuso Super Great.
I have spoken how to choose a canter so far.
If you want to buy a canter with specs irrelevant to your use, the price is unnecessarily higher.
Choose a truck according to your use and make sure your minimum requirements, so that you can get a good deal.
