Parents need to know that Toy Story That Time Forgot is an action-packed addition to the beloved Toy Story saga and sees the characters come face-to-face with a colony of battle-ready dinosaurs who have been tricked into believing they're actual warriors by a scheming, self-serving villain. There's a lot at play here, from a main character's identity crisis to barely obscured admonishments about letting video games consume your playtime, but every turn has a positive message about relationships, loyalty, and being true to yourself. There are multiple instances of peril for some favorite characters, and other toys are subjected to some violence (they're clubbed, hurled long distances, and, in one case, unstuffed), and the villain can be scary at times. Marketing tie-ins are always a consideration when you're dealing with established characters like these, but the story's superb, family-worthy entertainment value overshadows everything else. Toy Story That Time Forgot was a really cute short film, and it could have easily been included as a segment in the last film without anyone noticing. The story was fun, and it gave some screen time to a few of the secondary toy characters.

Trixie is the star of this Toy Story short, being embraced into the Battlesaurs tribe as one of their own. At first she loves the idea (whenever Bonnie plays with her, Trixie is depicted as anything but a dinosaur, so she welcomes the change), but after she finds out that the Battlesaurs spend their time destroying other toys in gladiatorial arenas, she sets out to teach the Battlesaurs of their true identities and the importance of playtime.

After watching the special for some time, Julie also noticed an overarching fun fact that as The Cleric begins to take power the lighting in the playroom shifts from yellow to purple (his color). This shift in color to a cooler tone not only adds drama but also matches his purple color signifying his growing position of power until Bonnie and Mason rush back into the room and snap the light back to an inviting warm glow. Read our special post dedicated to this lighting shift.

The elation that we discover again and again through the viewing of our favorite Christmas specials and movies (along with other holiday preparations) is reflective of the Christmas story itself. At the center of Christmas is the birth of the child who will turn the world upside down. A momentous occasion that brings forth great joy to the child that dwells inside each of our hearts and reminds us all that we are called to live as children of God.

One holiday afternoon, two days after Christmas, when Bonnie plays miscellaneous roles (Santa's Workshop, Goblin Fairy, Restaurant, and Dinosaur Escape), Trixie is sad that Bonnie Anderson never plays with her like a dinosaur when Bonnie chooses Angel Kitty. Jessie, along with Rex and Mr. Potato Head, comforts Trixie when she assures that she will be a dinosaur for the next playtime. Bonnie later takes Trixie, Woody, Buzz LightyearBuzz, Rex and Angel Kitty to her friend Mason's house for a play date. When they get there, Bonnie sees Mason playing a video game with his new Optimum X. Mason invites her to play the video game and she tosses her toys into Mason's playroom.

Meanwhile, Trixie reaches Mason's video game power outlet, but Reptillus confronts her. Trixie convinces Reptillus of the greatness and importance of being a toy. He turns the game off and lets himself be found by Bonnie and Mason, who go play with the toys. Back in the playroom, Buzz and Woody are almost shredded to death. Bonnie and Mason enter the room, thus saving Woody and Buzz in time. Bonnie and Mason play new roles, as they pretend that they have a dance party as Bonnie has Woody and Buzz to break-dance, saving a toy castle from bad guys as Mason holds Socky with metal robot arms, Bonnie using Goliathon and a bone vehicle as cars, and, as their final role, Mason and Bonnie pretend that Trixie and Reptillus are flying. The Battlesaurs are transformed by their experience of playtime and settle on a more peaceful existence. Soon it was time to leave for home.

Bonnie puts her toys back in her rocket backpack and the toys are driven off to Bonnie's House. That night, Bonnie's mom calls her for dinner. When they come out, Rex happily kisses the floor when he feels good to be home. Jessie curiously asks how their playdate went, and Woody, Rex, and Buzz tell their friends about their trip. Trixie feels better by saying that she could be anything when it comes to playtime because she has the word "Bonnie" on her palm during the visit. Angel Kitty tells them to enjoy their gifts. Her wise speech warms the toys' hearts. Then they suddenly realize that Angel Kitty's mysteriously vanished, much to their bewilderment.

During the credits, later that nighttime, Reptillus (with Mason's name on his palm) says he looks forward to seeing Trixie again on Tuesday around 3:30 PM, then he presses the Battlesaurus crest as his heart glows a red light as the episode ends.

Shortly after Christmas, Trixie is becoming tired of being cast as everything but a dinosaur during playtime with Bonnie. When she, Woody, Buzz, Rex and a Christmas ornament named Angel Kitty are taken by Bonnie to a playdate with a boy named Mason, they end up being left to explore while the kids are distracted by a new video game console. While traveling through Mason's room, they stumble upon a complete set of 80s-90s-esque dinosaur warriors called Battlesaurs. Trixie and Rex are quickly accepted by the powerful Reptillus Maximus, but soon find that much like a more dangerous Buzz, the entire set is unaware of their toyhood and the pterosaurian Cleric leading the Battlesaurs has been taking advantage of this ignorance...

Toy Story that Time Forgot is the 2nd Toy Story TV Special, produced by Disney/Pixar.Skywalker Sound provided post production sound services: Steve Boedekker was the sound designer, Josh Gold was the sound effects editor, and Benjamin A. Burtt edited foley performed by Dennie Thorpe and Jana Vance. This's the first time that neither Gary Rydstrom nor Tom Myers contributed sound design in the Toy Story franchise.

As much as I admired Toy Story 3, I must say that I did find it more a rehash of highlights from the first two films (combined, at times, with such a bleak outlook that, on renewed viewing, leads me to think that it is perhaps the most despondent example of family filmmaking yet seen, especially in what was ostensibly a CGI comedy) and felt that with things resolved in such a fluid and organic way any fourth film could struggle to match the greatness and originality of what came before. So it was a pleasant surprise when the Toy Story Toons came along: essentially the kinds of shorts that would accompany a feature on DVD but given a big screen upgrade. The first two of the three genuinely brought back the magic of the series, while a third perhaps exposed the limitations of the format.

Even in Toy Story 3, perhaps the film that plays closest to the notion of the toys exposing their cover, the conceit is carried off winningly enough so as to remain whimsical to the point that it reinforces the fact that, yes, our toys probably do come alive when they need to, a tone carried over even more endearingly in the trio of Toy Story Toons shorts and the previous Halloween special, itself replaying a few old story elements but having fun with it. But in as much as that featurette-length outing was fun and diverting, Toy Story That Time Forgot is a bit of a drag, stretching out a thin premise and becoming repetitive, sometimes as if the very reason for an additional special was just because someone came up with a pretty amusing title.

Two days after Christmas, Trixie is depressed that Bonnie never plays with her like a dinosaur. Bonnie later takes Trixie, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Rex and the Angel Kitty Christmas ornament to her friend Mason's house for a play date. When they get there, Bonnie sees Mason playing a new video game system and tosses her toys into Mason's playroom to join him. There the toys discover that Mason got a huge toy line of battling dinosaurs called The Battlesaurs for Christmas, led by Reptillus Maximus and The Cleric. Reptillus takes Rex and Trixie to get suited up in armor and he and Trixie grow closer. Meanwhile, The Cleric orders some other Battlesaurs to take Woody and Buzz hostage. After bonding, they go to an arena play set where Trixie watches, horrified, as Reptillus attacks Mason's toys. Soon Woody and Buzz enter the ring. They reveal to Trixie that Mason hasn't played with Battlesaurs yet and that they don't even know they're toys. Reptillus battles both Woody and Buzz till Trixie demands he stop. Then a beast named Goliathon enters and swallows Woody and Buzz. Trixie goes to get Bonnie's attention to save them and The Cleric orders Reptillus to stop her. While chasing her, he is shocked when he discovers his own toy package. Meanwhile the Cleric controls Rex with robotic arms and uses him to pull Woody and Buzz out of Goliathon. They then discover that The Cleric is the only Battlesaur who knows they're all toys and determined to make sure that the others don't find out, since Mason is too busy playing with his new game system. He then forces Rex to dispose of them and Angel Kitty in a ventilation fan. However, Trixie reaches the video game power cord but Reptillus confronts her. Trixie tells Reptillus the importance of being a toy and he turns the game off, getting the attention of Bonnie and Mason. They find him and decide to go play with the toys, saving Woody and Buzz in time. All of the Battlesaurs are moved by the playtime and enjoy their new roles. Later the toys head home with Bonnie and tell the other toys about their adventure. During the credits, Reptillus says he looks forward to seeing Trixie again next Tuesday, around 3:30 PM.
