Hi Fleet 80 and NW Lido sailors,

Just back from the CCRs, Sarah and I did the drive home in 24 hours straight through, as she wanted to be back for her sailing coaches send off to the Americas Cup Team at 7:30 PM Sunday night (and we made it) - so we really earned that "Longest Distance Trailered" trophy and brought it home - round trip!

We really had a great time at the regatta.  World class sailing conditions (makes me think of retiring there), Coronado is a gorgeous island with Navy ships, Marines, and Navy Seals literally swimming in the water around us.  The regatta was extremely well run without all the politics of last year.  Just great sailing with our old Lido Friends who we've sailed with at Nationals since 2006!  And some like Harold and Butch from years before that. (We even saw Joe Davis who let us store our Lido & Laser there for 2 weeks as part of our multi-regatta California trip).  The yacht club was beautiful, there was a keg after racing each day, and we even found a clean $89/night hotel on Coronado Island (most places were a lot more).

Wind was good and steady at about 8-15 MPH (though at my weight more would have been better).  There was a fair bit of chop, more swells to ride when Navy vessels went through.  The race committee did a great job of getting the races off without mucking around with moving marks at all, and we had daily results printed and handed to us as we hit the docks (I've never seen that before). I think there was only one protest all week.  Stu won overall, Steve Klotz was 2nd, followed by Eric Heim.  Results were much more spread out than prior years with Stu only winning 2 of the 6 races, and taking a 5th and two 4ths.

Sarah sailed one place better than I in qualifiers (race 2) as we ended up in Silver again, so she skippered.  Even though we (only) had 29 boats sailing, it was a strong fleet with no marshmallows.  Roger Patterson (in his 80s? skippering with his granddaughter in her 20s?) kicked our butt by 7 points to win the Silver Fleet, followed by Jack McGraw, and Butch Michel (who beat us by just one point).  We came up 4th, earning a nice engraved glass keeper award and had a great time.  I think Sarah won every start, and was first at the windward mark numerous times, but we lost places downwind (we were about 90 lbs heavy), and guessed wrong on which side of the course to cover on the 2nd windward leg.   The full results are posted here http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_regatta_results.php?regatta_id=3990&show_crew=1  and pasted below (if you can read them).

Sarah did quite well again on the raffle (anyone need a telescoping Lido tiller?).  She also got elected to the Lido Board - as the youngest board member in Lido history (I declined - one Mackey on the Board is enough).  Ron flew down just for the annual meeting (that's extreme dedication) and did a great job tallying the votes.  Because the votes are cast in order of fleet numbers, every annual meeting issue was decided before Fleet 80's turn to vote, so I nominated, and seconded several motions but never actually voted.  Wonderful way to avoid even the light politics of a few contested slate positions, so I was very happy with that.  On the biggest contested position, Walter Johnson's run for President ended when he didn't get the vote of fleet 6 (now the biggest fleet and his home fleet).

We also met the new factory owner Alex Vucelic who seems like a really good guy and was very interested in the class, and all we've done with the Classic Lidos.  He spent a lot of time talking with the sailors 1:1 in the parking lot.  Stu is still pushing for a factory classic Lido, and Alex was asking for feedback from the class.  Tom Schock, and Steve Schupek, and Curt Wiese, and Steve Potter also came to the annual meeting but didn't sail.

The best news for you all is that I'm pretty confident next year's CCR will be in Anacortes, we gave it the good word and everyone seemed in favor of going back north next year.  Colorado is still in consideration as is Newport Harbor outside the breakwater, but these didn't have a lot of support.  Anacortes was the clear winner in a show of hands between these locations.  I think everyone agrees the NW is "due" for a little less traveling.  (This will move the venue from 10 miles from Mexico to 10 miles from Canada).  So we will need to gear up for hosting the association in our backyard next year which will be a lot of fun.  Any ideas for our theme or logo?  Sarah and I will need to spend more time in Lidos improving our game to play better in our neighborhood.

Sarah also sailed Women's Nationals placing 4th, I think Kelly Cantley took the Pink L, and Sarah also sailed Junior Nationals placing 6th against a lot of local sailors and a new to Lido sailor Patrick Powell from Coronado YC who won Jrs and also placed 12th in the Gold fleet.

Looking forward to sailing with you soon - perhaps we should do a Fleet 80 Championship on Lake Sammamish.  Who can come?  What dates would work?

Jim Mackey

We were out on the boat without the camera or phone camera - I should have taken some off the water but didn't.  There were some photograpers on the committee boat, so perhaps we will get some snaps.  Have not seen a link to anything yet.

I wish the Lido Website was back, that would make sharing easier.  WIthout it it was pretty hard to even track down race info and results.

We might also see something here http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lido-14-Class-Association/138538565638 (nothing posted yet)

Great report Jim – I’m so glad you and Sarah got down there and had an awesome time!  Thanks for taking the time to write this up… allowed me to live vicariously through you.  Do you have any pics to share?
