I've been quiet for a while  As a result of the work I've described in this forum, I figured out that any budget Lidar solution will depend on an accurate notion of its location, amongst other things.  That got me onto the very interesting subject of accurate GPS, which I've been working on this year.  That's beginning to show some useful results.

Meanwhile, a new Lidar sensor has emerged, light enough to be carried on a drone, relatively cheap ($8,000) and, they claim, capable of doing useful mapping work.  See below.

If anybody else has seen anything interesting, please post something about it.

Regards

Simon

Our new OS1-32 lidar sensor delivers:

High resolution
The 32-line vertical resolution improves algorithm performance, doubles the effective range of object perception, and allows rapid data collection for mapping.

Easy integration
A new flat-cap design enables custom integrations directly into the body of a robot or a custom mount on a drone. At only 425 grams, the OS1 is the lightest weight high-resolution sensor available today.

Cost savings
The OS1-32 costs just $8000 for industry and $6000 for academic research, making it the lowest cost sensor in its resolution class.

Durability
Ouster’s digital lidar sensors pass automotive-grade shock and vibration tests and are IP68 and IP69K rated.

Precision
The OS1-32 delivers over 600,000 points per second with ±2.5 cm of precision at a flight altitude of 40 m for precise mapping and localization.
