First things first: I needed the four pigment colors. My makeup collection is fairly neutral, so finding red, blue, yellow, and white shades were going to be a struggle. I ended up hopping on the internet, and after some research, I landed on the Make Up For Ever 12 Flash Color Case. This palette holds 12 highly pigmented, opaque, cream shades that work for the face, eyes, body, and lips.
In the video, Bennett's theory was to use primary colors that will help neutralize her fair skin, so I followed a similar technique, but with some adjustments for my olive-undertoned complexion. I dipped a cotton swab into the four shades, one at a time, and started to apply dots to my face. First, I used the white, followed by yellow, then red, and blue. I would say I applied an even number of each shade to my face, and by the time I was done, I looked like a clown who escaped the circus.
I grabbed my favorite Sigma foundation brush and started to blend, and blend, and blend. At first, I really thought it wasn't going to work, but then, to my surprise, it came out perfect. I was shocked by how flawless my skin looked and how the pigments all blended to my skin tone. The four shades left my skin with a subtle, natural glow that looked like my skin, just better.
Even though it seemed to work on me, I was still curious to know, more about the color theory. To find out, I reached out to Los Angeles makeup artist Robin Black who gave me a little lesson on the topic.
"It's true that all color pigments like foundations and concealers are a mix of these four primary colors. However, applying these colors all over your skin is unlikely to give you the same kind of coverage or the skin evening effect of a good foundation," Black explains. "Foundations also contain things like light-reflecting minerals, hydrating or mattifying ingredients and these types of color pigments just don't have that."
I mentioned to Black that the theory did work on me, but I wanted to know if it would work on all skin tones too. "For deeper skin tones you would need to add black plus the correct undertones (red, blue, purple... it really depends on the person.) But technically yes, it could work for all skin tones but it would be complicated and you would need to have totally pure primary colors plus a Ph.D. in blending to make it happen."
So, would I trade in my foundations for this technique? Probably not. For one, I don't have a Ph.D. in anything (especially blending.) This technique takes a lot of time, energy, and blending and just doesn't seem practical for the everyday, regular person like me. However, when desperate times call for desperate measures and I need a shade match, this is definitely one reliable way to get it done.

Learning how to find the right colour of foundation shade starts with knowing what your skin tone is. Your skin tone refers to the natural colour of your complexion, which can be fair, light, medium or deep. If the tone of your skin varies across different areas of your face, focus on your jawline away from the apple of your cheek where there is often more of a natural flush.
1. Check the colour of your veins
Take a good look at the veins on your wrist under natural light for an easy way to determine your undertone. If your veins look green, it is likely you have warm undertones; if they are blue/purple, you have cool undertones. If they appear blue/green or match your skin colour, you most likely have neutral undertones.
2. Do you burn or tan?
First things first, always wear sunscreen. Nevertheless, how your skin reacts to UV can also be a big indicator to your undertone. Think about when you hit the beach in summer. If you easily burn your skin likely has cool undertones; where those who tan without burning often have warm undertones.
3. Can you wear silver or gold?
There are no rules when it comes to accessories, but one metal often looks the most flattering. Consider which best suits your skin tone. Those with cool undertones tend to suit silver jewellery, and warm tones often are most flattered by gold. If you suit both, your undertone is neutral.
Those with a cool skin tone may come across as red, pink, or bluish, and the veins at your wrist appear blue in natural light. You tend to burn in the sun, but not tan. You look best in silver jewellery.
Those with a neutral skin tone can think of olive tones or a mix of those above. Neutral undertones are a balance of warm and cool tones, so you sometimes burn and sometimes tan, and tend to suit both gold and silver jewellery.
Next tip in learning how to pick the right foundation shade is testing on bare skin. Attempting to perfect your foundation colour match to your skin can be difficult when you are already wearing makeup, so testing foundation shades on a bare face is the key to accurate shade selection.
Where this may differ is if you frequently wear fake tan, in this instance match your foundation shade to the undertone of your skin after applying self-tanner as the undertone of the product may differ.
Finding the right lighting is an important step when picking the right foundation shade, as different light types have different tones, which may influence how the undertone of your chosen shade appears. Skip the in-store fluorescent lighting when shade matching and head out into natural light for a more accurate view.
As the weather changes, so may your skin tone. While your summer shade may be a perfect match when you have a glowing tan, it is unlikely to still work in the middle of winter. Your undertone will remain the same, but the depth of your foundation shade will need to be colour matched again as your skin tone changes to ensure your complexion is flawless all year.
