NPAC Meets In-Person on Wednesday, September 4 @ 7 p.m.

We hope you are enjoying this lovely summer weather. This is a brief update with a few reminders as we move through this busy summer.

Aurora Avenue North continues to be a hotspot this summer for gun violence related to prostitution, drugs, and gangs. Council Member Cathy Moore, D5, has met with the mayor and city departments, and recently provided an update in her newsletter about actions taken by SDOT and SPD to address the most recent round of gun violence:

“Though the Seattle Police Department is short-staffed, they will be taking these actions:

  • SPD leadership has directed the North Precinct to have an emphasis team on Aurora
  • The Community Response Group is doing gun violence interdiction efforts in the evenings, looking for indications identifying pimps and gang members
  • The Community Violence Task Force is pursuing chargeable cases against persons involved in gun violence
  • The Gun Violence Reduction Unit (formerly the gang unit) arrested two suspects last night, and is investigating possible connection to Aurora corridor shootings, and working with federal partners on investigating persons involved in human trafficking
  • The Traffic unit will be doing emphasis work to provide a police presence during the day.”

“After last week's community walk in the area around 101st, in addition to installing the road barriers, SDOT has coordinated work with several other departments to trim trees and remove vegetation from alleys to improve sight lines, as well as removing graffiti from signage, and do pressure washing. The Fire Department has identified buildings for potential inspections.”

We appreciate CM Moore’s actions to make a difference for those neighborhoods surrounding Aurora. It is not simply a D5 issue; Aurora attracts crime from across the region and requires city-wide leadership support to make lasting changes.

What Can You Do? Crime Prevention - Join Block Watch

Is your neighborhood part of the Block Watch program?

Block Watch is a program based on the principle that neighbors working together are the first and best line of defense against crime.

Learn more about how to create a Block Watch for your block at the link above.

The North Precinct has two Crime Prevention Coordinators (CPC’s), Sarah Lawson and Katelyn Yep, who can help you get started. Their contact information is available at this link.

Reporting A Crime Just Got Easier: Online Reporting System Updated

Have you ever tried to use the SPD Online Crime Reporting system, but given up in frustration? The system has recently been upgraded to make reporting easier. Filing a report is critical, because SPD does data-driven policing. If it’s not reported, they don’t know about it. Reporting allows SPD to see patterns or identify areas in need of an emphasis patrol or other actions. If you experience or see a crime, report it. Learn more about the types of crimes that can be reported online and access the system at this link.
