Policy
Each faculty member is accountable for ensuring the confidentiality of all student educational records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), As Amended. In accordance with this responsibility, faculty of the University of Missouri-St. Louis will not post or display, either electronically or in hard copy, lists of students grades in personally identifiable forms, including the students name or any four consecutive digits of students Social Security numbers or student identification numbers.

Teachers need to understand how privacy, security, and confidentiality apply to their work in the classroom, specifically the data they gather. Teachers gather and analyze data about students all year and in many ways, including anecdotal notes, test results, grades, and observations. Given the use of cloud-based tools responsive to student progress, how teachers gather and use that data is rapidly changing. Teachers should therefore consider the variety of data they gather in their classrooms:

Students and their parents have a right to confidentiality which covers such things but is not limited to attendance, behavioral reports, family background, grades, health data, standardized test scores, etc. All volunteers are expected to respect our students and their parents by keeping such information confidential. The school will immediately revoke volunteer privileges if there is a breach of confidentiality. If another parent asks you questions that would put you in the position of breaching confidentiality, ask them to take their questions to the teacher or principal, and explain that you are not authorized to talk about other children or adults outside the school.
