Generals plays very differently from its sibling Tiberium and Red Alert series. For instance, resources are no longer obtained from minerals scattered on the ground, but are instead collected at "supply docks" and "supply stockpiles," and these resources, unlike Ore or Tiberium, are finite in quantity. Units now possess "special abilities" aside from their primary functions, such as American vehicles being able to create hovering robotic drones to provide support, Chinese Hackers capable of shutting down buildings or providing a steady flow of funds, and the basic soldiers of all three factions being able to capture buildings, eliminating the previous method of using engineers (although the process of capturing buildings in Generals is gradual rather than the instantaneous capture of previous games). Perhaps the most distinctive difference in contrast to Tiberium and Red Alert is that structures must be built using "builder" units, rather than prefabricated constructs which are deployed once completed. In spite of these differences, Generals retains many of the conventions of previous games, such as power to keep one's base up and running, Superweapons to devastate the enemy forces, commando units, and a Mammoth-esque tank (The Overlord).
The United States is the most technologically-advanced faction, and fights with a combination of powerful ground units and a large, versatile fleet of aircraft. USA forces rely on skill, mobility, and high technology to defeat the raw firepower of China and the guerrilla tactics of the GLA. USA ground vehicles can construct unmanned drones to support and repair them in combat, while American troops and vehicles make extensive use of laser technology to guide weapons and defend against attack. American infantry have a number of special abilities, and include stealthy long-ranged snipers called Pathfinders and a powerful commando named Colonel Burton with a number of abilities revolving around demolition and stealth. The USA also fields the largest air fleet in the game, including attack and transport helicopters, fighter planes, high speed bombers and stealth bombers. American Generals' abilities revolve around air power, including air strikes by A-10 Thunderbolts and fuel air bombs (a.k.a The Daisy Cutter). They also possess a Particle Cannon super weapon capable of destroying units and most buildings in a single use.
China has a major disadvantage in that its ground forces are generally slower than those of the other two factions. Due to having virtually no fast attack units, except for their MiGs, China is forced to make large, ponderous assaults with heavy units, a tactic that can be countered by the GLA's speed or the USA's air power. However, with the emphasis on quantity over quality, the Chinese forces are well-suited to winning drawn-out battles of attrition.
At this point, the American armed forces engage the GLA across several locales, including Baghdad, Caspian Sea, Al Hanad, Kabara city and northern Kazakhstan before defeating a rogue Chinese general supporting the terrorists and tracking them back to their base of operations in Akmola, Kazakhstan. After the American victory in Akmola, the GLA as a unified fighting force was broken, effectively ending the war.

Ironside is a general of the US Military who holds the coveted 5-star rank (a rank not seen since WWII) in Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour: Contra. He's the general the player will face after defeating all four playable USA generals in challenge mode. His super unit is the Leonidas. His technologies are a combination of all four US Generals and advanced robotics.
A hero of the Second Korean War in the 2000s, whose prowess was undisputable, Ironside was promoted Five-Star Army General. He was the first general to be promoted to that rank since Omar Bradley. During the First War against the GLA in 2013, he was the fiercest American general to stand against the terrorist organization but he was not expecting the GLA to be so powerful that it could strike the USA right where it hurt. The resounding defeat that followed turned USA's military might into ridicule but that never discouraged Ironside or cooled his determination to see the GLA vanquished for good. He tried everything that was in his power to convince the President in person to let him mount a punitive expedition against the GLA; however China's intervention and eventual victory frustrated him of his endeavors and he had no other choice but to live with it. During the ten years of peace prior to Contra's events, Ironside saw his budget decrease drastically to the point where he was compelled to dismiss most of his soldiers. Nonetheless, he had the idea of putting what was left of his budget to good use for the glory of America by creating the ultimate war machine known as Leonidas. At first, the Leonidas project was received with much skepticism from the Department of Defense but the GLA's sudden return in 2023 was enough of a point to convince the DoD's officials to give him carte blanche and make him Commanding General of the US Military. Thanks to his unrivalled skills and all the trust placed in him, Ironside immediately worked on Leonidas' production. He was able to create three units in barely three months thanks to advanced engineering and to the countless mechanics who relentlessly worked on them day and night. One of those mechs is currently deployed in the Middle East to fight the GLA and is bringing very satisfying results so far.
Entrusted with the protection of the National Gold Reserve at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Ironside had the somewhat crazy idea of digging some sort of moat just like in Medieval times to accommodate a Battleship as a means of seaborne artillery defense. It seems the general is also in charge of the NATO and counts the British Crown among his friends, explaining the presence of Challenger II tanks at his disposal.
Like most other boss generals, Ironside has three bases, the first one is located very close to your starting location in the north eastern direction. The second one is located in the center of the map, guarded by an EMP Tower. His main base covers the entire northern portion of the map, guarded by a Battleship, two EMP Towers and a laser barrier.
Like the other two boss generals, Ironside is not above unit spamming. Expect an endless torrent of armor and infantry pounding at your base. His forces will attack from the north and from the east, with more emphasis on the east due to the proximity of his forward base.
Before advancing to his main base, the player is faced with yet another hurdle: a Battleship. It will constantly lob barrages of shells at your advancing army as long as it had them in its sight. One can use air power, super weapons, general's powers or fast attack units to sink the vessel. The main weakness of the ship is that it cannot move, it has no AA weapons and it cannot target units positioned too close to it.
