Hey Graeme in one of the blobs I read - Razib Kahn's Gene Expression on Ron Unz's site - I came across the following.  In 700 AD Arabia was mostly Christian with a very strong Jewish presence and plenty of Jewish Christians.  Pagans were still around but hardly a majority or the elite as is often claimed.  More interesting though is that Mohammed's tribe is of the same genetic clade as the Cohen line.  It's quite likely, but not certain, that Mohammed was a Jewish Christian, or a Christian with lots of Jewish ancestry.

I thought that the one thing for which Jews couldn't be blamed was the formation of ISIS and Jihadi groups. Oh dear.

 

Actually it's surprising how many prominent people are likely to have Jews in their ancestry especially as a result of forced or voluntary conversions, assimilation, inter-marriage and adoptions during the Holocaust and pogroms.

There is a Stefan Molyneux video where the reasons he gives for Jews having higher IQs than Europeans is because historically the clergy was the educated class, and the European clergy were not allowed to have children whereas the Rabbis were encouraged to have lots of children, thus there are more intelligent Jews and the more intelligent Europeans didn't reproduce. Also Jews were not allowed to own land in most places where they found themselves, so they had to practice more cerebral occupations. I'd like to know if this is true.

It is true Willem but there were even more eugenic factors.  Breeding was confined to the gene pool under selection pressure.  Survival (especially of children) was closely associated with success at these cerebral professions so more smarter kids and fewer dull kids survived to pass on their genes.  Scholarship was encouraged and was a source of status even outside of the priesthood.  Daughters of high status Jews  were married off to Rabbis.  Unsuccessful Jews were encouraged to lapse (or at least weren't discouraged) or to convert to Christianity.  There also appear to be some mutations concentrated among Ashkenazi,, which when in double doses lead to problems like Tay Sachs, but in single doses lead to better neural transmission (Stephen Pinker has a talk on YouTube about it.)

Also, as you say, the rest of Europe often instituted disgenic practices, like not allowing priests to marry.  Galton also pointed to a practice in Britain where top university students tended to marry rich heiresses, who in turn tended to come from family backgrounds with low fertility rates, and so these genius genes were often strangled before they even got to the cradle.

The Jewish eugenic measures managed to increase their average IQ by around 0.4 IQ points per generation.  In modern wealthy countries disgenic trends are decreasing the genetic basis of IQ at around the same rate.
