In the spring I will be teaching a graduate seminar at UMass Amherst called, "The Art of the Book: Late Medieval Illumination and Illustration." I would love to give my students the opportunity to try their hand at using quills on parchment and illuminating in at least one of the sessions.

1) Does anyone have a checklist of the materials one would need for copying text (for c.8 students)? For example, quills, parchment, ink, etc? Would I need to buy a quill knife? Would I need a particular kind of ink? I've found some retailers online, so I know where I can get the materials. I'm just certain that there are things I'd need to purchase that aren't coming to mind, so I'd be grateful for a shopping list, as it were.

2) Is there anyone in western Massachusetts who runs workshops on manuscript illumination? I'd love to bring in an expert to show my students how it's done and to allow them hands-on practice. The course I'm teaching is an *art history* course (i.e. not a studio course), but it would be great for my students to have some first-hand experience with the production process.

Many thanks for any advice people can offer.

I sent your message to Mary Teichman, a printmaker and calligrapher, with your message. You can contact her through her sight. Her studio is in Easthampton, MA.. http://www.mtcalligraphy.com/

While I am not a calligrapher I have taught students make their own pens. One can make simple reed pens from Phragmites (Foxtail) an invasive plant seen everywhere there is standing water. This is the best time to collect  the plant as the growing has stopped and the reed retains it's strength. As to a quill pen I am a firm believer in making do with what is available. That said a #11 Xacto blade does not work well cutting a reed or quill.

Best of luck

Sonja-
Steve Harris taught us to make calligraphy pens out of turkey quills last year, and procured small amounts of parchment for us to practice on. He'd be a great resource!
Really wish I could audit this course...

In the future if you need vellum/parchment off cuts I have quite a lot of them as I use the material to cover furniture. I would be happy to give them to you.

Mary Teichman teaches illumination techniques.
conatct: mary@mtcalligraphy.com
I took a class with her at the Northampton Center for the Arts a few years ago.
I created something glittering and lovely...gave it to a local benefit auction and someone actually bought it for $200.
Either I am an excellent student,  or...Mary is an excellent teacher, or... both.
Contact her!
Jane
