Hello:
We just started using the FAQ module, and I have a question about how the search feature works.

For instance, we have a question in the knowledge base:
How to renew a Interlibrary loan (ILL) item

If I start typing "How to....."   other questions starting with "how to.." appear:

But as you can see, not the on I am looking for.   It will appear if I type any of the single words - renew, interlibrary loan, or ILL.

It will NOT appear if I type in interlibrary renew (we mention the word renew quite a bit so this resulted in a lot of false hits).

This seems to be inconsistent and we are trying to figure out what is going on here....

Thanks for any light anyone can shed.  Thanks.
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

For some reason that screenshot didn't come through, but no worries we located the FAQ and took a peek.

The instant search results shown for a phrase is updated as the patron types and is limited to the first 10 results to keep the size of the results pop-up manageable.  Since there are a lot of "How to" questions, the "How to renew a Interlibrary loan (ILL) item" just happened to get cut.  Though if you enter "How to" and then click the search (magnifying glass) button, you'll see a results page with all results that match "How to" and indeed the ILL question shows up on that page.

Currently the phrase order is important in terms of the search.  So the "interlibrary renew" combo won't work but "renew in" will work.  We noticed that "renew interlibrary" or anything shorter than "renew in" doesn't work, but this is something can improve pretty easily for you.

Looking at typical FAQ search histories, it seems like patrons most often go for single words over phrases.  And as you mention, searching for "ILL" or "renew" or "interlibrary" as distinct words provide pretty good instant search results.

On a semi-related note, we offer a free design service where we customize the FAQ templates to match your website.  If you (or anyone else reading this) is interested, just let us know.

Best regards,
Pam & Amy
