Hey everyone,

Just a quick heads-up that we have a first version of blocking for
widget guests in the webchat client now. If you use it tonight, it
will block the problem patron after they refresh their widget. After
an early morning router restart tomorrow (Wednesday), it will block
the patron immediately, during the active conversation. From the
patron's perspective, the librarian will simply stop responding. If
they refresh the widget, it's the same deal: they can send messages,
but their messages won't go anywhere.

This will block the patron's IP address for a period of 24 hours. We
think this is a decent starting place for IP-based blocking, because
24 hours will be long enough to discourage most abusive patrons, but
it's not so long as to present a serious long-term problem for
dynamically-allocated IP addresses. We usually don't want to block
IPs for really long periods of time because they can be redistributed
to other users. And of course, there are libraries with public
computers available, where multiple patrons will use the same IP
address in a 24 hour period. If you work in a library with public
computers, you'll probably want to work out internally how you handle
that. For example, there might be an internal policy to check an IP
against a list of public PCs before blocking it.

Misc notes:

- Right now, this is webchat client only. This functionality will
come to external clients, but it is not there now.

- It only works on widget guests. For now, the button will show up
for gateway guests' conversation windows, too, but it can't block
them.

I think that's it for right now. We'll whip up some documentation
soon, but those are the basics for right now.

Best wishes to all,

Pam

Hi Jennifer,

Currently blocking is only available in the webchat client; there is a
block button on each conversation window.

We plan to bring this feature to the admin site and external clients,
but right now, just webchat.

(If you have something you'd like to block retroactively, email
sup...@libraryh3lp.com and we can probably take care of it.)

Best,
Pam
