Hi,

I'm having trouble setting up a follow-me chat widget in the results page of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS).

This little video shows what's happening: http://screencast.com/t/wdNO5OTjl68  - the follow-me widget only opens within the right-side of the Discovery service and doesn't float free; so when trying to click on results and browse through results (which is where we're losing most of our chats), a 'Leave Page' message comes up. On clicking yes to this, the active chat is still lost.

Has anyone found a way to make a follow-me work in EDS? I think I found an example on a site a year or so ago, but haven't been able to find it since. Would be a big benefit for us.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Very good question.  There is unfortunately an inherent problem with placing a follow-me widget in EDS.  Here's the scoop.

Within EDS, the chat code is placed inside an iframe.  The follow-me widget does its thing by wrapping the larger element (usually an entire web page) inside its own iframe, so that the widget can float on top of the page.

With EDS, since the element containing the widget is itself an EDS iframe, the follow-me widget can only lasso that EDS chat iframe.  There is no way to throw the follow-me's iframe around the entire EDS page as is needed for the follow-me to work as desired.

We've found that the best option for EDS sites is a pop-up widget, using an attractive "chat now" image to draw the eye.

I hope that helps, and sorry to disappoint.  We're happy to work with EBSCO on a more in-depth integration if they are interested in that.

Very best,
Pam

Hi Pam,

Thanks for confirming! Pop up will be the way for us.

Hi,

Kind of on this topic again - it would be good when using a pop-up to have it appear to the right of the screen, just below where the pop-up icon is

Is there any way to control this through the admin on libraryh3lp? e.g. putting in screen co-ordinates? Apologies if it's something documented, and I've not been able to find it.

Thanks again,

Peter

Dear Peter,

Great question!  Alas, there is no way to do this via the admin dashboard in LibraryH3lp.  However, you can add a bit of custom JavaScript to a DIY version of LibraryH3lp embed code to move the newly created window to specific coordinates on a patron's screen via the Window object's moveTo function

I've attached a text file that outlines a template for doing this.  Happy to follow-up with you to help fill in your specifics if you think you'd like to give it a try.

Best regards,

Hello,

I just discovered this thread when attempting to create a libraryh3lp popup custom widget for our EDS.  Are there code samples out there I could look at?  I must be missing something simple - pasting in the code for the popup I created in the Chat Snippets tab isn't working...

Thank you,

Hi Carrie,

Happy to take a look!  Can you please send us (sup...@libraryh3lp.com) the code you're using?  We'll be able to start from there and then move on to next-steps.

Very best,
Pam
