Hi everyone!
On Friday, Mari Vihuri (Scholars Portal), Sarah Simpkin (U of Ottawa), Danielle Robichaud (UofT St Mike's College), and I met to talk about a shared vision for what this group might become. We all agreed that we wanted to have it grow organically. However, in these heady early days, we wanted to ensure that some structure was put in place to address and support various concerns/areas for improvement surrounding tech in GLAM. You can read the full notes from our first meeting
here. (Thanks Mari!)
Three highlights:
- A lot of great concepts, like "collaborative", "inclusive", and "safe" came up in our discussion - it was very nearly the first thing we talked about. These ideas are all things that we firmly believe must be the core of this group, and they will be incorporated into the Welcome Message for this group.
- As an extension of our strong feelings about inclusivity and making this a safe space - and especially in light of the fact that the four of us represent just a narrow aspect of the library community as white cis women - we unanimously agreed that a Code of Conduct - one that we, the aforementioned moderators, will personally hold ourselves responsible for upholding - would be established and posted within the Welcome Message for the group.
- One of the things that we all agreed on as an area of focus for this group was in curriculum development. We think that there is a strong community focus on how we learn within GLAM professions, as well as what we learn. Therefore, we strongly invite community participants who have engaged in training for librarians to participate in the group and in the adjacent dialogue about curriculum development (and any other discussion, of course).
We also discussed a few event-type things that we'd like to try out. The first is to take the #libchat model - a guided twitter conversation - and focus it on the technology/systems issues that the group is interested in. I'll be planning this and unrolling it soon for more feedback.
The second event-type thing we considered was a panel at next year's OLA (Ontario Library Association) Superconference (we all happen to work in Ontario). Mari is taking the lead on this and will have more information about our plan soon. If you are in Ontario, have a interest in attending OLA, and would like to be a panellist, please contact Mari via the Members page.
Cheers,
Sara
