Libraries in Curriculum Special Interest Group
Meeting at MLA 2010
Present: Karen Heskett, Rikke Ogawa, Jan Rice, Linda Butson, Shannon
Jones, Donna O’Malley
1. Information about the switch to a new electronic hosting system for
the listserv and web space
The Google Group for our SIG has proved difficult to manage. We
receive several requests a week from would-be spammers. Since MLA now
offers a listserv along with space for a web site, we will be
switching to this software.
The website will be at
http://instruction.mlanet.org/
Instructions for joining the listserv are available here
http://instruction.mlanet.org/mailman/listinfo/mlainstruction_instruction.mlanet.org
2. Opportunities to continue discussion sessions in the future
The MLA News editors have accepted our offer to edit a column in the
News focusing on instruction. Articles are 500-600 words. We plan to
publish the column in every other issue: Oct, Jan, Mar, May and
August.
We also plan to conduct two online meetings in the coming year. The
event would consist of a few 5-10 minute presentations about
instruction. They could be about research from papers or posters that
you’ve already published, or projects that you’re planning, or
currently working on. The presentations can be posted on the MLA
Youtube group.

3. Volunteers for SIG Co-conveners for the 2011-2012 planning year
Karen Heskett has volunteered as a co-convener for the 2011-2012
planning year. She will serve with either Shannon Jones or Donna
O’Malley.
4. Programming for MLA 2011
SIG’s cannot sponsor programs, but we would be interested in
partnering with Sections in these areas.
Technology: teaching with technology, smartphones, clickers, classroom
management software, smartboards
Assessment/Evaluation
Relationships: liaison programs, librarian-faculty relations, elevator
speeches
5. Asynchronous Instruction Discussion
One attendee described how their medical students ask and answer one
clinical question per week for the first two years of medical school.
The results are evaluated against an ideal list of references and an
ideal search strategy.
Rikke’s institution developed an online tutorial about EBM for their
medical students. The students completed the tutorial halfway through
their first year. But an evaluation showed that the tutorial had no
effect on students’ ability.
Jing is popular and free screen and video capture software in several
of our institutions.
Another attendee recommended Dimdim (must be installed) and ReadyTalk
(just a java applet) as desktop sharing programs for helping remote
patrons.
Libguides give students something to refer back to. Two attendees
commented that teaching faculty like having these things available.
6. Large Group Instruction Discussion
VCU (I think) teaches large groups of nursing students. First they
participate in a large group lecture, then they work with the students
in small hands-on sessions.
One attendee described her use of 3-2-1 cards for evaluation of large
group instruction. Students are asked to list THREE things they
learned, TWO things they don’t understand, and ONE thing they’d
change.
