Avoiding Extinction – Translating the Value of the Research Library

John Tagler: Opening Remarks
Vice President, Customer Marketing, Elsevier

Layne Johnson

In an atmosphere where librarians must deal with rapid technological change, they also face an even greater challenge in dealing with a shifting perception about their role and the role of the library in today's research environment. Increasingly, administrators view the value of library services with a new and often inchoate set of evaluation criteria, while users expect instant and seamless access to an expanding array of information resources. There is a growing expectation that librarians should be able to do more with less.

Survival requires a strategy to redefine the library's role and validate the value of organized information services within an institution. Our colloquium will offer the perspectives of three speakers representing three distinctly different organizations who understand the importance and value of libraries and information services in a high-stakes research setting.
