Need money for hardware

I am considering opening something like a GitHub Sponsors or Patreon account to help get money for new (new to me) hardware. My old 1756-L55 just died and that reminded me that most of my hardware is at least ten years old if not older.  I need to get a Micro8x0 and hopefully a used OMRON PLC at some point.

I also lost both of my old (I mean _old_) desktop PCs and just had to buy a refurbished PC to replace them.  They were where I used to do most of my development until recently.  Now I use my newest laptop (five years old).

Soon they can put me and my equipment in a museum!

Unfortunately, my own income stream does not extend replacing much right now. Nor will it in the foreseeable future.

Would that be something that some of you would be willing to donate to?  I have talked to the maintainers of libplctag.NET and they are fine with that. All the other wrappers are either on hiatus or they are mine and on hiatus.

If there are better ways to take donations let me know. I would also take hardware if the software is available for free.

Other thoughts from any of you?

Best,
Kyle

Yep, we are in. Can you make a list of what you need hardware-wise

My only thought is that it wouldn’t seem unusual to me that companies would donate PLCs to you if their employees are taking advantage of the library, because it would mean a higher quality result. User pays might be a bit harder to sustain, but I could well be wrong.

I’ve been part of other communities with a “if you provide the hardware, I’ll provide the support” sort of deal and they’ve been pretty healthy as far as I can tell.

That said, I understand cash is a lot easier to use effectively, so wouldn’t discourage you from the Patreon route.

Cheers,
Heath

I don't think its a bad idea. I love this library. Anything to help you to improve it is good :-)

Thanks!

I really haven't thought how I would get the hardware.  I'll get back on that.

I'll make up a list of what is needed.

Thanks again for all of you who reached out!

Best,
Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Sorry for the late reply, been meaning to touch base.

If you have access to a rockwell license and they are of use we can provide some older compact logix units (expired warranty). I want to say v29/30 era but I would have to check.

Otherwise happy to contribute towards something more beneficial.

Tom
