Building with system libraries?

I'm working on trying to get libkml packaged for Fedora and EPEL and it all builds and passes the tests without any issues but the packaging guidelines request that system libraries should be used instead of bundled libraries ( http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Duplication_of_system_libraries ). I tried deleting the third_party folder and doing some quick hacks but the build runs into issues. Is there a standard way to use the system libraries? Or how hard would that be to get that working?
