Thanks for posting this, Kelly. I was just about to send a message to the list asking if any of you are offering, or could put together on such short notice, some gaming activities in your library for ALA's "gaming @ your library" day on April 18? We're hoping to have a group of libraries offer DDR in a friendly competition for which we would run the national bracket. In addition, we'd like to see libraries offering boardgame play, particularly using "Ticket to Ride" (http://www.daysofwonder.com/tickettoride/en/) as a way to introduce modern boardgames to the public.

All of this is a trial run for a much larger "National Gaming in Libraries Day" that ALA will sponsor in November. We're getting a lot of interest from the press for this first shot in April, so if your library is interested in participating, please be sure to also let me know so that we can direct inquiries your way and list you on the site taking shape at http://gaming.ala.org/resources . Basic information aimed at the public is available at http://ilovelibraries.org/gaming/ . I hope to have more up there by the end of the week.

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me, and make sure you let Kelly know of your involvement so she can help highlight your work.

Thanks everyone,
Jenny

Old Mill Green Branch, Bridgeport, CT will be offering gaming Mon, Tues., Wed., Thurs., Sat of National Library Week. We're closed on Fridays :(

This is also school vacation week in the city and we usually set one of our game systems up each day of the vacation period. We'll rotate between PS2/Guitar Hero (maybe RockBand if we can give up that much space), Xbox/DDR and Wii/Sports. Since we don't have a community/program room, the games are in the children's portion of our small building.

UNC Chapel Hill will coincidentally be running our first ever gaming event that night (for seniors only, as part of senior week).  DDR isn't on the menu right now, but I'll make some inquiries!  Or are you not aiming for academic libraries?

So far it looks like we'll be running some sort of Rock Band tournament, and have Wii open play.  Plus board games and UNC trivia using clickers.  I'm still working out the rules for how to judge a Rock Band tourney - anybody have any suggestions?  I'm thinking that audience vote based on overall showmanship might be the fairest way to go, with some sort of difficulty multiplier thrown in.

At the Johnson Memorial Library, we won't be playing video games, but
I will be running my bimonthly RPG for 2 hours on the 18th. I'm also
in the planning stages for a monthly video game event as well as a
monthly gaming group.

The Decatur Branch of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library
will be offering Wii Gaming for Teens on Tuesday and Thursday evening
of NLW.

I am interested in knowing the dates for the November game day. I
have to plan and submit local and system PR with a two month lead
time.

Hi Kelly--

We are focusing our efforts on the Wii and Older Adults for Gaming @
Your Library Day on April 18th.

In addition, here is some information on Gaming that appears in our
Bookends newsletter:

Gaming for all ages has become a part of the Library's programming
effort this past year.

Using the Wii, older adults had an opportunity to bowl and golf right
here at the Old Bridge Public Library. In addition, they were able to
tune up their brains using trivia games. These Wii sessions were
hosted for the seniors by member of our Teen Advisory Board. These
inter-generational activities will be repeated during the summer, too!

For teens and children, the Library recently held a Super Smash
Brother Brawl Tournament.

Even the Laurence Harbor Branch has gotten into gaming with their
first program in March with another scheduled for April. Children and
teens had a chance to try out some of the new Wii games and test their
skills with their parents participating as well. The two biggest hits
were the Guitar Hero III for the teens and Super Mario Brother Brawl
for the children.

The Library is currently developing a circulating gaming collection
that will make it's debut in late April featuring Wii and Xbox games.

For more information, contact me at: akle...@oldbridgelibrary.org or
at: 732-721-5600, ext. 5042.

Thanks,
--Allan

I started a page on the ALA Gaming Resources wiki at http://gaming.ala.org/resources/index.php?title=2008_g%40yl_libraries to list libraries participating in "gaming @ your library day." I tried to list everyone who already sent email to this list saying they're already planning something. Please check what I put there to make sure it's accurate and change any links you feel should go elsewhere.

If you're not listed, please feel free to either create an account on the wiki and add your own information or send me your info and I'll add it for you. That way I can point the press towards you. The list can include libraries offering tabletop games, comptuer games, or videogames.

Please let us know if you have further questions about any of this.

Thanks!
Jenny
