We're starting a video game collection and we know we want to
circulate Wii games, but can't decide between PS2 and PS3. Part of
the collection will be rentals, and the thought is that PS3 games
would be more likely to have higher waiting lists. This is a pilot
project and we only want to stick with two platforms. Have any of you
had similar experiences?

Thanks,

Hey marcus, it depends on your community. One way to look at it is that sony has sold 140 million PS2 and 25 Million PS3.  There are a lot more PS2 owners out there right now.  However, when you're establishing a new collection, you want to look forward and not backward, and it's expected that the PS3 will have a good holiday buying season.  But it really comes down to your community.  Are they early adopters? Are HDTVs common?  If so, PS3 is a good idea.  If not, PS2 may be a better use of funds.  There's also the fact that there are a lot of cheap PS2 games and almost no cheap PS3 games.  The final thought is that last-gen technology is exactly what young people expect to find in a library; do you want to prove them right, or wrong?  Good luck!

Marcus,
Have you considered the Xbox 360? The 360 currently has a larger install base than the PS3 and seems to be the high definition console of choice this generation. It would make a much better companion to a Wii collection than the PS2 (which is almost 10 years old at this point and won't be supported much longer) or the PS3 (which is not as popular as the 360 or the Wii).

My suggestion would be to treat this like any other collection
development decision at the library. You need to understand your
customer base and made a decision appropriately.

Is there a library policy about how to develop a new area of the collection?

It's important to remember - just because they are games doesn't mean
we treat them differently like other library resources.

Marcus,

I tend to look "down the road" when I'm choosing technologies to employ
here. I've actually had several requests for PS3 lately, but that's what OUR
kids want. True, the PS2 has a greater install base right now, but it
doesn't have a Blu-ray player. Neither does the Xbox 360 or the Wii, but
they cater to different groups.

We currently have a Wii and a 360, and if I have any input on expansion of
consoles, a PS3 will be our next one. Not only is it newer technology
compared to what most of our patrons own, but Blu-ray is the coming standard
as the manufacturers will soon (next 3 years probably) start phasing out the
DVD standard. PS3s also play Blu-ray movies, obviously, as well as regular
DVDs, making them a good alternative to a single-tasking Blu-ray/DVD player.

But really, as Eli said, it does come down to knowing YOUR patrons and what
they want.

Have to agree on the PS3. Gives you 'high production' values, you can
exploit the new controllers and games like Uncharted 2 are beyond the
XBox. Watch out for the new 'cut down' PS3. It''s a good deal, except
for the DVD audio. The Blu-Ray's also as Jim says. It takes time to
develop the extra content to give it an advantage. It's now
approaching the stage where it'll be more useful/ popular.
