Hey all,

I'm hoping to host a program at my Library this summer where a local board game store can demo games for customers (preferably upper elementary age kids, but I'm flexible on this). There are a number of stores in my area with good reputations and I envisioned them coming out, talking about a couple different games, and then kids would get to try them out. Has anyone done anything like this? If so, any words of wisdom?

Thanks!

Great idea! My only thing is, don't go into it with strong fixed ideas about the target age range. Upper elementary kids are only starting to get into the good stuff - and teens (and adults) love board games in the right circumstances. Pitch it more as an "all ages from X up" or "family" thing. The store will thank you too.

I've actually been putting a proposal together for a book-club-style "games club", where we get people together to play games and then discuss them - their history, their mechanics, their flavour, whether the two match, strategies, the kinds of decisions (and mistakes) you make when playing, etc etc. So fostering the kind of intelligent engagement we've historically tried to foster around books. As books increasingly become electronic artefacts that we no longer need to physically store to make available for patrons, we are going to need other ways to help our communities share culture - and what better for that than tabletop games, which HAVE to be shared in order to be experienced?

Let me know if you're interested!

Cheers
Phil

We had a local game store come to our library and it was a great experience. All ages came together and played. It was like an old fashioned family game night only with lots of different families. The best part was that our game store had demo copies of all the newest games so it was not just candy land and monopoly which was very appreciated by our patrons.
