I'm sure I'm not the only one who's come up with this solution, but
since I couldn't find anybody mentioning it anywhere else (even the
ALA's great interactive software for kids list still mentions whether
a program needs the disk to run or not), I thought I would put this up
to share. When we redid our children's computers recently, we
downloaded all of our software as opposed to getting the CD-ROM
version. That way there are no disks to change, and after
installation internet access is no longer required on the station
(which was one of our big sticking points for streaming videogame
services).

I've posted a write-up about the whole process here, in case anyone is
interested.
